Arguably the biggest trilogy in UFC history goes down on Saturday as Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier battle for the third time from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
McGregor and Poirier met for the first time at UFC 178 in September 2014, with the "Notorious" one stopping Poirier in under two minutes.
Over six years later they ran it back at UFC 257 in January, with Poirier thrashing McGregor's leg to help set up his second-round TKO on Fight Island. Instead of competing for the vacant lightweight title that was held by Khabib Nurmagomedov, Poirier chose another route and wants to settle the score with McGregor once and for all.
“If I am the best in the world, then I’m gonna beat Conor and fight for the belt. It’s like doubling down on yourself,” Poirier told ESPN. “I’m a gambling man. I believe in my skills and fighting. So I just doubled down. That’s what it was.”
One of the narratives heading into UFC 264 has been McGregor overlooked Poirier and was looking ahead to a boxing match against Manny Pacquiao. While McGregor hasn't confirmed that, he does admit all systems are locked in.
“I’ve been busy flat out putting the work in," McGregor said on his Instagram Live. "Full focus, fully immersed in mixed martial arts, it’s been nothing but mixed martial arts. So I’m ready to put on a show.”
There's a lot on the line for McGregor and Poirier. A win puts the victor in the cat bird seat. Whoever loses puts themselves in an undesirable spot.
