Lewis Ritson is one fight away from a world title shot but admits he’d prefer Josh Taylor, undisputed champion at super-lightweight, to move up a division.  

Ritson faces Jeremias Ponce tonight, a fight live on <a href="https://www.dazn.com/home">DAZN</a> in multiple regions, and a win for the Newcastle man could potentially put him in the ring with Taylor. 

Ritson is participating in his first fight since October’s controversial victory over Miguel Vazquez. There, Ritson appeared well off the pace as he failed to cope with the veteran Mexican’s movement and trickery.  

He’ll need to be much improved against Ponce if he’s to move to elite level where he admits he’d rather compete for a vacated title instead of taking on Taylor, a fighter he knows well from sparring. 

“I’m knocking on his door, but I just hope that he moves up so I can get a vacant belt,” Ritson said to <a href="https://www.boxingscene.com/lewis-ritson-hopes-josh-taylor-moves-up-admits-fighting-him-not-preferred--158329">Boxing Scene</a>. “He is a special fighter and he has done great. But I will fight him if I have to. 

“The sparring went well, don’t get me wrong. But sparring is different to fighting. He is one who can up his game more in the fight than during the spar.  

“If someone had asked after the spar if I would fight Josh Taylor, I would say ‘yes, absolutely’. But you watch him fight and think ‘I’ll keep away from him’. I hope he moves up and does fight Terence Crawford.”

Aaron Carter came to fight. Lamar Odom simply overpowered him.

The former two-time NBA champion dropped the singer/songwriter twice, before securing a second-round knockout in their ridiculous celebrity boxing match Friday night at the Showboat Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Despite giving up 10 inches in height, 64.5 pounds and 11 inches in reach to Odom, Carter enjoyed early success with a barrage of lefts and rights that connected to his taller, larger opponent's head in the opening round. However, Odom got his bearings, went to the outside and placed a right jab-left hook combination, which dropped Carter. The pop star of the 90s didn't have his legs under him and wisely held on to survive the round.

But he wouldn't make it against Odom much longer. The second round had Odom spinning Carter around and around, before delivering several unanswered lefts to drop the singer once again. Special guest referee Chuck Liddell began counting, as Carter indicated that he was no longer fit to continue.

Carter is fortunate to not leave the ring seriously hurt, as giving up nearly 65 pounds in a fight is a huge deal and something that organizers should be leery about with these celebrity boxing bouts in the future.

The winner and new welterweight champion announcement came next as a result of Amosov thoroughly dominating Douglas Lima in the main event of Bellator 260 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut on Friday night. Judges saw it 50-45, 49-46 and 49-46 all in favor of Amosov.

“I am happy because this is my life. It’s been a long time in training," Amosov said following the win. "It’s the result I wanted and I am happy."

The undefeated Ukrainian fighter recorded five big takedowns and used his wrestling effectively enough to completely throw Lima off his game and nullify his striking en route to the rousing victory.

It didn't take long to realize that Lima was in for a long night, as Amosov took him down and wasn't giving him any room to breathe.

While Lima showed signs of a possible rally during the third round, Amosov went back to smothering him on the ground in the fourth.

With the win, the 27-year-old Amosov improves to 26-0 and is slated to face Michael "Venom" Page next.

The team was embroiled in a cagey tournament opener against Italy in Rome on Friday, with Turkey stubbornly not allowing many good looks at goal through the first half. The second half started the same way, with Turkey sitting in a defensive shell while the Italians looked for a way through.

Things changed in the 53rd minute as Domenico Berardi drove into the opposition area and fired a right-footed cross that Demiral deflected with authority into his own team's net.

Canada gets its 2021 FIBA AmeriCup underway on Saturday with a game against the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The Canadians are favoured to top Group A in the tournament, which is being played in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Coming off a silver medal at the 2019 event, Canada will look to regain its place atop the podium after back-to-back first-place finishes in the 2015 and 2017 editions.

The first step is against the tiny U.S. protectorate, which kicked off its tournament on Friday with a 72-60 loss to Colombia. The USVI will be a massive underdog on Saturday, but with a game already under its belt the island nation will hope to catch Canada off guard.

Teofimo Lopez has dismissed recent claims from Vasiliy Lomachenko over their meeting last year.

The 23-year-old American shocked the world of boxing when he beat the Ukrainian and became the unified - and in the eyes of many, the undisputed - lightweight champion of the world.

Lomachenko lost by unanimous decision, and there was no rematch clause for either fighter, meaning he has no obvious way back to a second fight.

Speaking ahead of his IBF title defence fight with George Kambosos Jr <a href="https://www.dazn.com/en-GB/news/boxing/teofimo-lopez-vs-george-kambosos-jr-moved-to-june-19/ugttljs9at6v1q64ajb3zmvxo" target="_blank">on June 19</a>, Lopez gave his former rival short shrift.

“Loma, he finally took an actual loss, for the first time in his whole career, from amateur to pro,” Lopez said. 

“So, he don’t know how to take a loss. You know, my whole thing is like the fact that, you know, seeing the way he is and the way he’s trying to move and all that, he’s just someone that is a sore loser. 

“That’s all it is. I beat him clearly. And when I said, ‘Come on,’ and I said, ‘Step up to the plate,’ he backed down. So, that goes to show, man. And if we were to fight again, he’ll get knocked out and he knows it. I took his heart.”

Lomachenko will return to the ring on June 26 to face Japanese fighter Masayoshi Nakatani in Las Vegas. Lopez has already fought and beaten Nakatani in July 2019.

Euro 2020 is here, and the eyes of the footballing world will be focused on the month-long tournament that spans 11 nations across the continent for the first time.

While international play is generally seen as an honour for well-heeled stars, there's still a ton of money on offer — especially for the nations that last the longest in the competition.

<a href="https://www.uefa.com/insideuefa/mediaservices/news/0242-0f8e5ddc5f35-3e31a33b54df-1000/">According to UEFA</a>, the prize money has grown 23 percent from the previous edition of the tournament, meaning another record-breaking pool of cash for the participating federations and their players. The winning side could walk away with up to €34 million, providing more than simply national pride as motivation to claim Europe's most coveted trophy.

While all 24 teams stand to receive millions for their participation, only the elite will leave with an eight-figure pay day at the end of the tournament.

Like other competitions, teams accumulate more money the farther they get in the tournament.

For Euro 2020, the winner will take home €10 million on the day of the final alone, but it will have also accrued several million more on the way there. As noted, the most a team could leave with is €34 million — that's only if the cup-winning side was victorious through each of its three group-stage matches before winning each knockout game.

Every team in this year's competition will receive €9.25 million simply for qualifying, while group-stage wins (€1.5 million) and draws (€750,000) each come with prize money attached.

How much prize money do the Euro 2020 winners get?

Former world title challenger Kamil Szeremeta (21-1, 5 KOs) will step in to face Jaime Munguia (36-0, 29 KOs) in a 12-round bout for the WBO Intercontinental middleweight championship.

The fight will take place on Saturday, June 19 at The University of Texas at El Paso’s Don Haskins Center and will be streamed live exclusively on DAZN worldwide, excluding Mexico, beginning at 12:30 p.m. PT/1:30 p.m. MDT/3:30 p.m. ET.

“I take my hat off to Jaime Munguia because he has remained calm and focused on his fight on June 19 despite so many changes,” said Oscar De La Hoya, Chairman and CEO of Golden Boy.

Lewis Ritson and Jeremias Ponce both made weight for their headliner this coming Saturday in Newcastle, which is a final eliminator for a shot at the IBF super-lightweight championship.

Ritson hit the scales at 139lbs and 13oz, just beneath the 140lbs divisional limit. Ponce, meanwhile, weighed slightly less at 139lbs and 11oz.

The IBF title is currently held by Scotland's Josh Taylor, who became undisputed champion last month when he defeated Jose Ramirez to unify all four of the IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO belts as well as The Ring's version of the championship.

Taylor had previously mentioned of his plans to make a mandatory title defence on home soil at a huge venue such as Edinburgh Castle or Hampden Park before going on to challenge current welterweight kingpin and fellow unbeaten former four-belt light-welter champ Terence Crawford in a superfight.

Elsewhere at the weigh-in, Thomas Patrick Ward weighed 128lbs, 12oz for his featherweight 10-rounder in chief support against Edy Valencia Mercado, who came in nearly two pounds lighter at 126lbs, 13oz.

Outspoken heavyweight Alen Babic returns from injury and will outweigh his next opponent, Damian Chambers, considerably. The unbeaten Croatian weighed 209lbs to Chambers' cruiserweight-eligible reading of 198lbs, 12oz.

With his James Bond style and buttery Chardonnay delivery, you'd be hard pressed to find a smoother ring announcer than the one and only Michael Buffer. The venerable MC has lent his pristine vocals to some of the biggest professional boxing matches and sporting events for roughly 40 years with Let's Get Ready to Rumble being trademarked and synonymous to his name. Once those words reverberate before a boxing bout, Buffer skillfully segues between the red and blue corners, introducing each fighter's trainer, ring attire, weight, professional record, residence and name (with nickname) in that order.

Over in the mixed martials arts world, his brother, Bruce Buffer, abandons grace and embraces havoc with his vein-popping scream of an introduction for UFC fights: "IIIIIIT'S...TIIIIIIIIIME!" He then gestures over to the first fighter — sometimes coming inches away from him or her — and rattles off the combatant's MMA discipline, record, height, weight, residence and name in that order, before doing the same for his or her opponent across the Octagon.

Void from either introduction is the repetition of a fighter's surname. That's where David Diamante comes into play.

The veteran ring announcer is keeping an old boxing tradition alive by repeating fighters' surnames before bouts as evidenced by any of his recent work. Take the December 2020 tilt between unified world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua and mandatory challenger Kubrat Pulev for example. Diamante proclaimed "This is it. The time has come. The fight starts NOW!" Diamante worked his way to the red corner first, introducing the challenger's trainer, ring attire, height, weight, record, residence and accomplishments, before announcing "Kubrat 'The Cobra' Pulev ... Pulev."

Then, it's over to the blue corner, where Diamante enunciates the champion's trainer, ring attire, height, weight, 2012 Olympic gold feat, record, residence and unified champion status before announcing "'AJ' Anthony Joshua ... Joshua."

"I do announce surnames twice," Diamante tells DAZN News over a recent Zoom meeting. "Not everybody does it. In fact, I don't think there's anyone who does it now except myself.

"When I hear a fighter announced 'John Smith ... Smith' — to me, that's music," adds Diamante who has been a ring announcer for roughly 20 years. "I like the way it sounds. It sounds correct to me."

Diamante says he was inspired to repeat fighters' surnames after growing up and seeing some of his favorite ring announcers evoke the practice.

"Ed Derian, he used to do it," Diamante says. "He did a lot of the big fights in Atlantic City. Another guy who used to do it — Mark Beiro used to do it. He did a lot of the fights on Tuesday Night Fights. Ed and Mark were two guys that I used to hear doing it all the time and I just liked it. To me, it sounds correct. It's the right way to do it, so it's what I've always done.

"But nobody else did it anymore and I wanted to keep it going. To me, it's like a boxing tradition and it's a New York thing. 'New York, New York, it's the city so nice they named it twice.' I really liked that."

Fellow boxing ring announcer Jeremiah Gallegos is happy that Diamante is keeping the tradition alive for the sweet science.

"It's quite classic," Gallegos tells DAZN News about Diamante repeating fighters' surnames, a practice that he doesn't do himself. "It's an old tradition that's been resurrected from David Diamante and David is a hell of a ring announcer. I'm glad he's doing it."

Outside of boxing, Bob Sheppard, the late longtime New York Yankees' public address announcer would introduce a player's number first, then his name and repeat the number. For example, "No. 2, Derek Jeter ... No. 2."

Diamante says that elocuted practice from "The Voice of God" resonates with him as well.

As far as the actual in-ring execution of repeating boxers' surnames, Diamante says he goes with feel rather than an actual hard internal count, although DAZN News clocked his pause from first mention of a fighter's last name to its repetition at anywhere from one to two seconds.

"I just kind of feel it," Diamante says about the timing at which to repeat a fighter's last name. "I try a little bit to breathe for a second ... and then I punch it again.

"I feel like these guys deserve that," Diamante adds of the extra mention of boxers' names. "That's another reason why I do it. And stylistically, it's a great way to do it."

UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya and his upcoming opponent Marvin Vettori went at it verbally on Thursday ahead of their rematch inside the cage <a href="http://www.dazn.com/en-GB/news/mma/ufc-263-marvin-vettori-on-being-underestimated-ahead-of-title-fight-with-israel-adesanya/dpd6x4ar8zmp142o0x6klp78c"> in the main event of UFC 263. </a>

At a pre-fight news conference, Adesanya claimed that Vettori had only fought one wrestler of merit.

“Like I said, look at the list of who he’s fought. The only person I know in that list is Jack Hermansson,” Adesanya said. 

“He only got here because he fought a bum at No. 10, and got to No. 3.”

Equally, Vettori levelled a similar charge at the 31-year-old New Zealander.

“You lost against Romero, you lost against me, and then you lost to Blachowicz,” Vettori replied. 

“Who you beat? ‘Borrachinha’ who was drunk the night before. That’s who you beat? Wow.”

“Listen, I showed up every single f—ing time, and people can’t make it to the fight with me. That’s not my fault, man,” Vettori continued.

“Whenever I showed up, I beat my opponents. I proved you wrong so many times. You tried to ignore me, b—. You tried to ignore me and here I am, b—.”

“These are all the people that believe into your own bull— ass hype. They’re all going to get shut up.”

Teofimo Lopez wants the respect he believes he deserves as the undisputed lightweight champion, and claims he is willing to fight Devin Haney next to get it.

The 23-year-old American fighter holds belts from all major governing bodies, though he holds the WBC ‘franchise’ belt and Haney retains the regular champion.

This has led to a never-ending debate on social media as to which version of WBC's belt should be regarded as the real deal, and why.

Nonetheless, Lopez thinks that he should be treated with reverence for his four belts.

“I’ll risk it every time for myself,” Lopez said to <a href="https://www.pe.com/2021/06/10/teofimo-lopez-pursues-boxing-takeover-with-triller/" target="_blank">Press Enterprise</a>. 

“I’ll bet on myself and I’ll double down every time. It’s not about the money. It’s about the respect… I’m the undisputed lightweight champion, then treat him like the undisputed lightweight champion.

“And the entertainment part is what I’m going to bring. I’m not just a boxer, I’m not a brawler, I’m an entertainer when it’s all said and done.”

Lopez is due to fight his IBF mandatory challenger George Kambosos Jr. on 19 June, and attention has already been turned to Haney, who could be next for the winner.

“Let’s make the fight happen,” Lopez said about fighting the 22-year-old champion. 

“You’re saying this and you’re saying that. Earlier this week, you were supposed to meet with my promoter Bob Arum and y’all pulled out, so we can negotiate this fight.”

Logan Paul was the ‘winner’ in his fight with Floyd Mayweather, claims Eddie Hearn.

Mayweather and Paul contested eight rounds last Sunday and the YouTube celebrity was able to avoid a knockout, which many had expected.

After the fight, Mayweather said he was ‘surprised’ by the fight offered by Paul.

Speaking to <a href="https://www.skysports.com/boxing/news/12183/12329559/logan-paul-could-be-viewed-as-the-winner-after-floyd-mayweather-fight-says-promoter-eddie-hearn" target="_blank">Sky Sports</a>, Hearn suggested Mayweather had damaged his legacy.

"There wasn't even a decision, it was so bizarre," Hearn said. 

"But yeah, if there was a winner from the fight, it was Logan Paul, because I actually think it was bad for Floyd Mayweather.

"Any new-age fan, his legacy is already built, but anyone watching that would actually think that Floyd Mayweather wasn't very good, and he is one of the greatest fighters of all time.

"I think, even by his own admission in the press conference after, he was semi-embarrassed to say, 'Don't think I'll do any of those as well'."

Hearn continued: "If we don't deliver the right fights. If fighters and managers and promoters don't take the right fights, the broadcasters will demand a product that drives numbers.

"That drove numbers, that drove interest, so the boxing people now need to stand up and say, 'Let's make great fights, because if we don't keep the boxing product strong, you'll see more of that coming through'."

Eddie Hearn has warned Anthony Joshua that he must be ‘ruthless’ against Oleksandr Usyk if they meet as planned in September.

Joshua had been expected to fight Tyson Fury in August for the chance to become the undisputed world heavyweight champion, but the fight fell through when Fury was obliged to make a trilogy rematch with Deontay Wilder instead.

That development caused the WBO to mandate that Joshua could not delay his challenge from the Ukrainian any longer. Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London in September has been widely reported as the plan.

Speaking to <a href="https://www.skysports.com/boxing/news/12183/12329558/anthony-joshua-warned-oleksandr-usyk-could-derail-his-career-in-upcoming-heavyweight-title-defence" target="_blank">Sky Sports</a>, Hearn confirmed: "We have both alerted the WBO, myself and (Usyk's promoter) Alex Krassyuk.

"Terms are agreed. The offer we made to them has been accepted. We move forward to paper that now. We are going through the contract with their team.

"It is very amicable. They have been partners of ours for a long time. But this is a fight that could derail the career of Joshua if he's not on it, if he's not 100 per cent.

"AJ needs to be ruthless. He needs to show the [ruthlessness of] Derek Chisora with more cuteness and sharpness."

Hearn admitted the encounter is a very interesting one for the man who holds the WBC and WBA titles as well as the WBO editiion.

"Usyk just wants the fight, he wants the opportunity to become heavyweight champion," he said. "[Joshua] loves the fight. We all know it's tricky, we all know it's difficult.

"But what else are we going to do?

"AJ is a throwback fighter and, for years and years, has faced all of the people that [were made his mandatory challengers] Time and time again, AJ has never shirked a challenge.

"And this is a real challenge. Look at the pound-for-pound top-10 list, AJ is not on it. Usyk is.

"AJ wants to make a statement, these are the fights that he likes."

Promoter Frank Warren intends to push for title fights for his heavyweight duo Daniel Dubois and Joe Joyce.

The pair fought in November, and Joyce earned the win by forcing a mid-round retirement from the young contender. Dubois suffered a fractured eye socket and has now made a successful comeback, taking on Bogdan Dinu at the weekend to become the mandatory challenger to WBA champion Trevor Bryan.

Warren now wants to set up a bout with the belt holder, writing in <a href="https://www.boxingscene.com/frank-warren-on-dubois-bryan-well-push-wba-order-fight--158309" target="_blank">BoxingScene.com</a>:

“It was a notable win over a highly-ranked opponent that pretty much puts him right back where he was before his encounter with Joe Joyce late last year.

“What I will say is that we didn’t work hard to carve out this opportunity for him to win a title for decoration. This victory sees to it that Daniel is in line for a shot at the WBA world title currently in the possession of Trevor Bryan, who fights under the Don King banner over in the States.

“This would represent an ideal test and stepping stone for Daniel in his career progression and we will be pushing the WBA to call on the fight.”

With Joyce yet to have another fight of his own, Warren is looking for the WBO title contest to resolve itself to allow the 35-year-old Londoner a crack at the belt.

“The heavyweight logjam at the top end probably won’t clear for some considerable time now if events play out as anticipated,” he explained.

“Tyson Fury is going into his trilogy fight with Deontay Wilder and Anthony Joshua, unless he drops a belt, must deal with a mandatory defence of his WBO title.

“If Tyson and AJ both come through unscathed then the obvious intention is for them to finally get it on in what would be a two-fight blockbuster.

"The same is true for Big Joe. Unfortunately for the Juggernaut, plans for his assault on the top end of the division were delayed and thwarted by uncertainty over the Tyson-AJ fight. As WBO mandatory, Oleksandr Usyk wouldn’t sign up to an Interim world title fight with Joe until the battle of the Brits was over the line – and even then there remained a legal challenge from his side.

“Now, with Tyson fighting Wilder, Usyk can exercise his right to a Joshua fight and Joe will be in mandatory challenger position to the winner.”

The promoter hopes to earn his fighters the chance to step up.

Olympic and world boxing champion Claressa Shields has made a winning start in her quest to become a dual-sport superstar, overcoming a challenging introduction to the world of MMA to secure a third-round stoppage win over Brittney Elkin at PFL 4 on Thursday.

Shields weathered several Elkin advantages on the mat in rounds one and two, with her grappling inexperience shining through. Nonetheless, with a finish likely required to avoid a debut loss, the Michigan fighter delivered.

One powerful right hand forced Elkin to go back in search for the takedowns that worked well enough for her in the first two frames. This time, however, Shields blocked the attempt and followed up with a flurry of strikes that prompted the stoppage after 1:44 in the third.

“I feel like I am dreaming,” Shields said of the win. “This is crazy.

“She had me on the ground, but she never hurt me,” Shields added. “When that third round came, I said to myself, I’m going to dog her. ... I am not going to lose this fight.

“I just had a never quit attitude every round. Never give up, that’s what I told myself.”

Mixed martial artists have made the move over to boxing. But we haven't seen people from the sweet science to the cage for nothing more than a one-and-done. 
 
That changes on Thursday night when three-division world champion and women's pound-for-pound queen Claressa Shields makes her MMA debut on Thursday against Brittney Elkin at PFL 4 from Ocean Resort Casino in Atlantic City, N.J. 
 
Shields (11-0, 2 KOs) is a two-time Olympic gold medalist and is also the only boxer to become an undisputed champion in two different weight classes. Wanting a new challenge, the Michigan native decided she wanted to try her hand with the four-ounce gloves. 
 
'I've done everything in boxing that you can do," <a href="https://www.dazn.com/en-US/news/mma/claressa-shields-on-signing-with-pfl-and-why-boxing-is-sexist/dsbcdygzqry21ifhbsgdio0hv" target="_blank">Shields told DAZN News when she signed with PFL in December</a>. "I've been a world champion. I'm currently a world champion, undisputed, and hold all titles, have titles in multiple divisions, undefeated, and still not given a fair shake. I have to keep demanding, yelling at them, and saying, 'This is my worth. This is what I'm worth. This is what I deserve'. You got to keep doing it. It just gets tiring because I still have to train for the fight. I still have to fight my opponent. Then on the flip side, I got a fight with these networks to just be treated fairly. After winning two of her first three bouts, Elkin comes into her highest-profile contest, having lost three consecutive fights.  
 
The prevailing thought is Shields will run Elkin over and have a successful MMA debut. But that is why they fight.

Shields (10-0, 2 KOs) is a three-division world champion in women's boxing and one of only seven boxers who have become an undisputed champion. 

The two-time Olympic gold medalist will make her MMA debut in 2021 in a series of special attractions and then look to enter the 2022 PFL season, where she'll get the opportunity to win $1 million. 

Days after signing with PFL, the 25-year-old Shields spoke with DAZN News about why she signed with PFL, her skill level at this point, when she'll have her first MMA fight and what separates MMA from Boxing in how they treat women.

DAZN News: When we talked last in January, mixed martial arts wasn't on the radar. We're talking almost 11 months later, and now we're talking about MMA. When you entered 2020, was mixed martial arts on your mind?

Claressa Shields: It was on my mind, but it wasn't something that I was thinking would happen so soon. It wasn't like, 'Oh, next year, I'm gonna be doing MMA'. It was more just like, 'Um, you know what (it's) something that I thought that I may end up doing, but I thought toward the end of my career, like James Toney and fighters who have come from boxing to MMA'. I always wanted to do it if that makes sense.

DN: I remember seeing you when Amanda Nunes fought last year in Las Vegas. I remember you saying that you were very impressed by the presentation and impressed with the skills that the women brought inside the cage. Was that the when you thought to yourself that this could be pretty cool sometime down the line?

CS: It was great to see that they were fighting in the main event on pay-per-view, to see their branding, to see how large of a following that they have. One night you can have 100 followers, then the next night you can have 100,000. (It) depends on your performance and how well you do, and then you get paid off pay-per-view buys. I really enjoyed that part of it. I wish women's boxing would get their s—together, and we wouldn't have to go through this. I always feel like MMA has more exposure. I was trying to stick with boxing to help it get to where I want it to be. But it still has a long way to go for sure.

DN: The one thing that you've always had to struggle with is the fact that women haven't been getting the recognition in boxing that they do deserve. As we near the end of 2020, where do you see women in boxing?

CS: Here in America, women's boxing really had a large flame where many of us were fighting on television and some big fights would get made. Women's boxing here in the U.S. has gone down. The women have been put on a back burner for male fighters who haven't accomplished anything. They've been given dates and pay-per-views, and the women have been sitting around with these networks trying to line up a date. We work our butts off just to get overlooked. But on the flip side, in the U.K., women's boxing is doing very well because Eddie Hearn and DAZN are putting their work behind Katie Taylor and Natasha Jonas. They have come a long way. Right now, I'm here to hold the networks accountable. They say women can't sell pay-per-view buys, and they give up. But they'll put somebody with less of a following on pay-per-view.

DN: When you look at PFL, Bellator and the UFC, they do put a spotlight on women's fighting. Why does boxing seem to be lagging behind?

CS: I feel like they're just sexist and that they're intimidated by insanely strong women. But it's like that in all sports. Women can box. Women can mostly do everything that men can. I think you have to hold the networks accountable. They're the ones who make the decisions on who is and isn't on television.

DN: What led to you deciding to sign with PFL?

CS: Actually, it was the conversation I had with PFL owner Peter Murray to see what his plans would be for me. If he had said your first fight would be against Kayla Harrison and it's one fight deal with us and then go back to boxing, I would have just hung up the phone. The conversation was great. The money was lucrative. My reputation is all I have. I worked very hard to get here and be a multi-time world champion. I'll be fighting MMA. The tournament is where you fight for a million dollars, but that gives me time to start training. The best way for me is to make that transition and not have to be rushed. I like the PFL because you control your own destiny. If you make it to where you can fight for a million dollars, the owner who makes that decision can't say, 'Hey, yeah, you know, you don't deserve a million dollars because we don't think you're big enough." You work your way up there in PFL and now you have a chance.

I've done everything in boxing that you can do. I've been a world champion. I'm currently a world champion, undisputed, and hold all titles, have titles in multiple divisions, undefeated, and still not given a fair shake. I have to keep demanding, yelling at them and saying, 'This is my worth. This is what I'm worth. This is what I deserve'. You got to keep doing it. It just gets tiring because I still have to train for the fight. I still have to fight my opponent. Then on the flip side, I got a fight with these networks to just be treated fairly. It just gets stressful sometimes.

DN: I've seen that your debut is pegged for 2021. When are you going to know that you're ready to get into the cage?

CS: I should have my first MMA fight in June of next year. That's why, as I said, I'm taking my training very, very seriously. I've been doing some behind the scenes stuff that people haven't seen and learning all these moving parts. I'm gonna trust my coaches, whichever coach that I choose to work with. Right now, I'm just going to go into different gyms to learn stuff, but I already am confident. I've heard great things about Jackson-Wink's Gym as I'm going to train there with Holly Holm and Jon Jones. I've heard great things about training with Din Thomas at American Top Team. I want to give both of those gyms a try. Who knows, they may end having to work together to work with me.

You never know. I want to go where I have fun learning. There's a lot of pressure on me already. Hopefully, the coaches understand that and don't make me stressed out because there are so many moving parts and having to be in the limelight all the time. People are gonna have footage of my training. I just really want to be able to focus, learn, and be patient with myself. I think I want to have a team who is just as honest as me. If I got into the boxing ring with MMA fighters I'd kick their ass right now. But when you talk about actually going into the PFL season, and you ask me, 'Hey, do you think you're ready to wrestle, do you know jiu-jitsu?' I'm going, to be honest with myself and tell you I know a little bit of everything, but not like how I know boxing.

DN: There are rumblings you're going to return to the boxing ring in January or February. Are those reports correct, or are you going to take 2021 off?

CS: No. 2021, I'm definitely fighting in February. I might end up fighting again toward the end of the year in 2021, also in boxing. I'm not retiring. I would not do the girls in boxing that much of a favor. If they want to be world champions at 154 and 160 pounds, they have to come see me because I hold the majority of the titles.

In April, it was announced that Claressa Shields would make her widely-awaited<a href="https://www.dazn.com/en-US/news/mma/claressa-shields-on-signing-with-pfl-and-why-boxing-is-sexist/dsbcdygzqry21ifhbsgdio0hv" target="_blank"> MMA debut against Brittney Elkin at PFL 4 </a>from Ocean Casino Resort, Atlantic City, N.J.

Last November, the two-time Olympic gold medalist decided to mix things up and try her hand at mixed martial arts, but not before becoming an undisputed champion for the second time in her career, the first boxer both male of female to achieve that feat.

In the 11th professional boxing match of her career in March, saw her win by <a href="https://www.dazn.com/en-US/news/boxing/claressa-shields-vs-marie-eve-dicaire-live-updates-results-highlights-and-round-by-round-of-historic-womens-boxing-unification-fight/17ywq5id8byod10kkrem1aji0a" target="_blank">unanimous decision over Marie-Eve Dicaire</a>, retaining her WBC and WBO female light middleweight titles while also picking up the IBF, WBA (Super), and The Ring belts in the process.

But as the most-decorated female boxer of all time begins a career in the cage, who is her opponent Brittney Elkin, and does she stand a chance against heavy-favorite Shields?

<h2>Who is Brittney Elkin?</h2>

From Westminster, Colorado, Elkin made her professional MMA debut at Sparta Combat League’s Validation event in early 2014. And after defeating Summer Bradshaw by unanimous decision, she seemed destined for a promising career in the cage.

She was beaten by submission in April of the same year at SCL – Army vs. Marines 5, before a Fight 2 Win debut in August 2014 saw her beaten by Latoya Walker.

After three years of moving between franchises, Elkin made her Bellator debut in July 2017 but was beaten for the second time in her career by Amanda Bell.

Her first Professional Fighters League bout then came 11 months later, where she chose to submit for the third time in her career, before she retired in January 2019 after suffering an injury at NMEF – Annihilation 65.

Now with a 3-6-0 record as a pro, Elkin has the chance to create a major upset in what would be a fairy-tale win over arguably the greatest female boxer of all time.
