With the group stage out of the way, Canada starts its knockout-stage journey with a quarterfinal game on Thursday against the Dominican Republic in the 2021 FIBA Women's AmeriCup.
The Canadians ran the table in Group A, winning all four of their games to capture the top spot. That gave them the chance to face the fourth-place team in Group B, the Dominicans, who lost all three of their group-stage games and advanced after Argentina's disqualification from the tournament due to COVID-19 concerns.
How they got there won't matter, as the Dominicans now have the opportunity to be giant-slayers in a win-or-go-home contest against one of the most successful teams in the history of the competition.
For their part, the Canadians are focused on themselves as they aim for another podium finish.
“There’s so many things that we’re trying to address,” Canada head coach Lisa Thomaidis said following her team's 74-40 victory over Colombia on Tuesday. “I thought tonight we probably had some of the best movement on offence that we had [against Colombia], getting a little bit deeper and sharing the ball. That was a real positive. I think our defence is still a work in progress that’s coming along. Our communication is getting there again. We’re still working to get back to our Canadian standard, but each game we’re growing a little bit and that’s nice to see.”
