Heading into the final day of group-stage action at the 2021 FIBA Women's AmeriCup, Canada will look to remain perfect and take over first place in Group A.
The Canadians have run the table thus far, winning on three straight days against U.S. Virgin Islands, Brazil and El Salvador, respectively. They finish off the round-robin portion of the tournament with a game against Colombia on Tuesday, and a win against the South Americans would boost Canada ahead of the idle Brazilians and into the top spot.
Along with bragging rights for topping the group, a victory would mean an easier draw in the knockout rounds for the Canucks. Additionally, the game against the Colombians is another opportunity for the squad to gel, as the COVID-19 pandemic forced a prolonged shutdown of the Canadian program.
"“[These games are] huge,” Canada head coach Lisa Thomaidis said following Monday's win over El Salvador. “We haven’t played together in 16 months so any game is such an opportunity for us. Definitely much needed. We need to find our groove again, we need to get into our rhythm. We have some new players [on our roster]. So they’re very, very valuable games for us.”
