Adrien Broner hasn't fought since January 2019, when he was dominated by Manny Pacquaio and dropped a unanimous decision. Since then, there have been question marks surrounding when Broner would next appear in a boxing ring.
While it doesn’t appear there's a date in sight for the troubled four-division champion, matters are even more complicated as Broner has taken his quarrels with his promoter to social media. Despite not having a win in three years, Broner took to Instagram and demanded a massive sum of $10 million from Premier Boxing Champions Al Haymon and Showtime’s Stephen Espinoza to come back to boxing.
“I’m rich but I got to stay rich and my kids got to be rich too,” Broner posted.
With no immediate response from Haymon or Espinoza, Broner decided to reach out to Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn with an Instagram story.
“I got to see what them numbers look like,” he posted. “Hit me up in my DM so we can talk.”
He also posted “135-140,” which may suggest he's willing to go back down to lightweight or light welterweight. He last fought at the latter division in 2017, when he was routed by Mikey Garcia. He hasn’t competed as a lightweight in more than seven years.
Although Broner (33-4-1, 24 KOs) has proven to be an attraction, much of that has had to do with his antics outside of the ring rather than his accomplishments when he laces up the gloves. Despite winning world titles at junior lightweight, lightweight, light welterweight and welterweight, Broner has underwhelmed throughout his career; he lacks a notable win against a marquee name and has come up short against the likes of Marcos Maidana, Mikey Garcia, Shawn Porter and Pacquiao.
It’s his brash behavior, multiple run-ins with the law and controversial social media presence that have kept him relevant. (It’s important to note that Broner infamously spurned Hearn back in 2018 when “The Problem” posted Hearn’s offer of $6.75 million for three fights on DAZN and called it a “slave deal”).
With boxing currently at a standstill due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it’ll be interesting to see if Broner can find any suitors for his current asking price.
