Bowes (20-3, 3 KOs) has not fought since he faced Tom Farrell in March 2019, and the 36-year-old may be nearing the end of his time in boxing. Although he has suffered three defeats over the course of a lengthy career that started in 2011, he is undefeated in his last five contests.

Speaking ahead of the fight, Bowes acknowledged that he is spurred on by the thought of impressing in his dotage.

"I'm excited to be back in the ring headlining an MTK Fight Night, and the chance to add the British title to my Commonwealth belt will be great," he said.

"I'd be making history as the oldest people ever to win the British title in the super-lightweight division, so it's a great incentive and is the drive behind me going for the title."

Ennis Brown (13-0, 1 KO) is 12 years younger than his opponent and has yet to taste defeat in a career that went professional in 2015. He has also gone without a fight since March 2019, when he beat Bilal Rehman by a unanimous decision.

Ennis Brown might have less experience than Bowes, but believes he has the knowledge to deal with whatever comes his way on Wednesday night.

"It's going to be me just being a lot better and a lot slicker,” he said.

“I've dealt with bangers, I've dealt with pressure fighters. I've dealt with tall, rangy fighters. I've dealt with ABA styles, and now it's time for me to see how I deal with a guy who has a similar style to me."

He points to some of the impressive names he has sparred against as reason to believe there is more to him than just an exciting start to his career.

"I sparred with Josh Taylor ahead of the Regis Prograis fight because he needed a southpaw. I learned a lot from him. I've been in with Jorge Linares, Lee Selby, Luke Campbell, Ohara Davies, Joe Cordina, all these top fighters.”
