Akin Reyes believes that Katie Taylor’s fight with Amanda Serrano was the 2022 fight of the year.
Taylor and Serrano fought at Madison Square Garden in New York in what was the biggest fight in the history of women’s boxing, and is widely regarded as the greatest fight of the year in the whole sport.
Taylor retained her status of undisputed lightweight champion, and there were immediate calls for a rematch, with her promoter Eddie Hearn keen to see a homecoming second fight at Croke Park in Ireland.
That could still go ahead but for now, the DAZN Boxing Show pundit reflected on the first fight.
Reyes began: “There were a lot of great fights this year, a lot of entertaining fights, a lot of back and forth fights, and in picking this the factors that played into it for me, in terms of what the fight meant, how long people anticipated this fight.
“I think a fight living up to the hype is super important and makes the fight that more meaningful to me.
“We think we’re gonna know how the fight's going to play out because of styles, and half the time it doesn't play out like that. When you talk about fights playing out like that and even exceeding that, I’m talking about exceeding expectations in this sport - and then being able to beat it - I think that adds to it.
“It’s the best fight and most exciting boxing event I’ve ever been to. I’m talking about Amanda Serrano vs . Katie Taylor.”
