Alexis Rocha went the distance against Santiago Dominguez and earned a unanimous decision victory on Friday.
The result sees Rocha claim the NABO welterweight title from Dominguez, who is no longer undefeated.
Rocha, who earned 16 of his previous 24 wins by way of knockout, was deemed to be the superior fighter by the judges, who scored Friday's bout 99-91, 98-92 and 99-91 in favour of the 27-year-old.
Speaking after claiming the NABO belt, Rocha said the victory showed that he can rely on more than just power to defeat opponents.
“I wanted to show everyone that I’m not just a banger, I can use my IQ in there and that’s what I needed," he said.
"I knew Dominguez was going to come forward, he just keeps coming, so that’s what I wanted to show.
"It’s more about my brains from now on. I want to be very aware in the ring, and I want to use my brains. That’s all you’re going to see moving forward. I have a great team behind me, Golden Boy, and we’re just going to see what’s next. I’m right there. I’m knocking on the door still. The belts are gonna be open anytime soon, so I’m just knocking on the door right now.”
