Andy Ruiz Jr. is hoping a new trainer will help him climb back up the heavyweight rankings.
Eddy Reynoso, who is known for his work with Canelo Alvarez, announced Tuesday he will be training Ruiz ahead of his next fight. Reynoso's Instagram post featured a photo of Alvarez and Ruiz with the caption, "Welcome to the team Andy. We are going to do well."
Ruiz also made the move official on social media: "A new chapter. I'm excited to rewrite this story with [Reynoso]."
Reynoso will replace Manny Robles, who was fired by Ruiz in January following a loss to Anthony Joshua. The 30-year-old stunned Joshua in June 2019 to win the IBF, WBA and WBO belts, but he looked out of shape for the December rematch, ultimately losing via unanimous decision.
Both Reynoso and Ruiz had previously expressed interest in working together prior to Tuesday's announcement.
"We're ready to work with any fighter," Reynoso told ESPN in April. "It would also be an honor to work with the first heavyweight champion of Mexican descent."
In addition to Alvarez and Ruiz, Reynoso trains Ryan Garcia, Julio Cesar Martinez, Luis Nery, Frank Sanchez and Oscar Valdez. He was named 2019 Trainer of the Year by the Boxing Writers Association of America.
