The showboating fighter has two milestones to aim for.

Ben Whittaker has a deadline for when he wants to be world champion, and for his planned retirement.

Whittaker is gaining a reputation for entertaining many, and frustrating others, with his showboating approach in the ring.

He boasts an undefeated record since turning professional, but the standard of his opponents should start to ramp up if he is to challenge for belts.

His next opponent is Eworitse Ezra Arenyeka on June 15 (live on Peacock in the US), and a win might give him a shot at some higher-profile domestic fights.

At 26, Whittaker told BoxingScene that he is close to his peak and is aiming to be a world champion by 29.

“Yeah, me and my dad are like that. You can’t drag your heels,” he said.

“I’m 26, and when you’re 28, 29, you’re in your prime, really. So when I get to about 28 – the latest 29 – I want to be a world champion.”

He then gave himself five years left in the sport, adding: “That’s the mindset that we’ve got, and when I’m 34 I’ll probably want to be retired, if I’m honest.

“I think when you stay in it too long, you’re not your best.”
