Bernard Hopkins has heaped praise on Gervonta Davis for putting his career first and seeking a move away from Floyd Mayweather.
The former two weight world champion, one of boxing’s finest ever fighters, holds a lofty position within Golden Boy Promotions and it’s likely he’ll have a front row seat for Davis’ likely April meeting with Ryan Garcia.
The fascinating 135lbs clash is one of the biggest fights that can be made in boxing and it’s possible we could get to see the contest in the first third of 2023.
The potential fight means that ‘Tank’ will fight under Oscar De La Hoya’s banner and Hopkins has applauded the Baltimore man for pushing for the fight.
“Tank wants to do the fight,” said Hopkins when speaking to Fight Hub about the Davis situation.
“He had to break away from the chains from someone he still respects and respected then and felt like, ‘I’m going to do him wrong if I do this.’ Somebody and Tank had many conversations where he said, ‘I got to do what I got to do. This is my career.’”
“Once you get one chance to go around a career and take the chance to box for 20 years like Bernard Hopkins, you can’t risk that.
“You got to take the opportunity to chop at the bit if you can and let everybody else do the work that’s behind you and take care of the details so you can do what you do best.”
