Jaime Munguia impressed many onlookers when he brutally dispatched John Ryder this past weekend with an emphatic ninth round stoppage.
The victory elevated Munguia’s standing at 168lbs and put him right in the mix for a number of high-profile showdowns against the likes of Canelo Alvarez and David Benavidez.
One former fighter who liked what he saw on Saturday night was Bernard Hopkins, who was ringside for Munguia’s win.
The ex-middleweight and light-heavyweight ruler has a lofty position at Golden Boy Promotions, the company guiding Munguia’s career, and he’s insistent that his charge is ready for all comers.
“Going forward, this is a statement—a statement of what? A statement that he’s ready for anyone at 168 pounds,” said Hopkins when speaking to FightHub TV.
“You see the strength, the energy, and the persistence. He pressed when he needed to press the issue and he stepped back to get a little better look at the adversary that he was facing. Again, I've seen poise, I've also seen execution and I've seen someone who’s comfortable in that weight division.”
