Bill Haney claims sparring partner forced Floyd Mayweather to retireDAZN
Floyd Mayweather is one of boxing's greatest ever fighters.

Bill Haney, the father of WBC super lightweight champion Devin Haney, has claimed that a sparring session between Floyd Mayweather and his son forced the boxing legend to retire.

Devin Haney is fast becoming one of the biggest names in the sport, and is preparing for another huge clash on April 20 when he takes on Ryan Garcia live on DAZN

Speaking to FightHub TV during the media tour for his son's upcoming fight with Garcia, Bill Haney reflected on a sparring session with Mayweather and claims that the five-weight world champion passed on the torch to his son when it came to becoming the face of boxing.

"He should have showed the sparring video of him and Devin. Yeah. it was 6-0, it wasn’t close. It was like Floyd was looking in the mirror, I told him," Haney said.

“It was before the Conor McGregor fight when he finally decided he could no longer be in boxing with no real fighters. Devin snapped that. He knew the torch had passed and he passed it to Devin.

“If he hadn’t we would be challenging him, like we challenge anybody, there is not anybody in and around the division that he is not looking to fight. It’s the new era, it’s the Devin Haney era, and that’s what it is.”

Mayweather retired after beating Conor McGregor in 2017, and ended his professional career with a 50-0 record with 27 of those wins coming by way of knockout.
