Maxi Hughes has a huge opportunity this weekend when he faces William Zepeda in Las Vegas in a big fight that can get him closer to a world title shot.
The battle, live on DAZN, will see Hughes aim to return to winning ways after controversially losing to George Kambosos last year, and he’s lifted the lid on the conversation that helped him rediscover his focus.
In 2019, Hughes lost to Liam Walsh and wasn't sure what direction his career was heading in, but he rebounded brilliantly to win seven fights in a row.
One of those victories, against Jovanni Straffon, brought Hughes the IBO world title and he’s revealed that it was a car journey with Josh Warrington that got him back on track.
"Josh was driving me back from London, my trainer Sean O'Hagan was asleep," said Hughes when speaking to ESPN.
"But I was saying how I thought I wasn't good enough to win the British title. I thought I was done with boxing. But that talk cleared my head.
"By the end of the journey, I had sorted my head out."
