Gabriel Maestre’s dream of becoming world champion in only his eighth fight was ended by Eimantas Stanionis in Las Vegas.
The pair clashed for the WBA belt at welterweight on the undercard of Canelo Alvarez's huge clash with Jaime Munguia and it was Stanionis who came out on top.
The Lithuanian started the fight impressively and he didn't ease the pressure throughout the fight as he retained his title.
Maestre, a fine amateur, was hoping to take the belt back to Venezuela, but he was not good enough to impose himself on his opponent as he was widely outpointed on the judges’ scorecards.
Next up for Stanionis could be a showdown with Jaron Ennis who returns this summer against Cody Crowley.
If the Philadelphian wins, a big unification with Stanionis could take place before the end of the year.
