Caleb Plant: I'll beat Canelo Alvarez to unify the divisionDAZN
The super middleweight division is moving towards an undisputed champion being crowned this year.

IBF champion Caleb Plant believes he will be the fighter to unify the super middleweight division - not his rival Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

Plant has so far defended his title three times, most recently against Caleb Truax in January, but will now wait for the outcome of the May 8 fight between Billy Joe Saunders and Canelo, with the WBA, WBC and WBO belts on the line.

Most expect Alvarez to be the winner of that fight, which would set up an undisputed decider between the American and Mexican duo in September.

Speaking to ESPN Deportes, Plant said: "First (Canelo) has to beat Billy Joe Saunders in May. If he can get past him and get the belt, hopefully we can fight in September and give the fans what they want.

"It would be a historic night that will leave us as the first undisputed champion in the history of the super middleweights and do you know who it will be? Caleb Plant."

Plant said he gleaned few lessons from the Alvarez vs. Avni Yildirim fight, but thought his potential rival looked dangerous nonetheless.

“Canelo stepped into the ring and did what he had to do, had a successful night and imposed his strategy. I think his opponent did not give everything in the ring, he did not take anything away from Canelo... when you remain on your seat in the third round, that is not giving 100 percent.

“At this level, if you want to become a unified champion, make history and get into the history books, you have to go out there and give it your all. I felt that he gave Canelo too much respect, maybe he was nervous, but in any case Canelo did his job and now we have to see what's next."
