Conor Benn’s boxing apprenticeship encounters a stern examination this Saturday night, live on DAZN in multiple regions, as the confident Brit tackles the vastly experienced Samuel Vargas. The Candian based Colombian has the privilege of sharing the ring with a number of high-quality operators such as Amir Khan and Errol Spence, and he’ll provide Benn with his most dangerous assignment to date.
On his lone trip to Britain as a professional back in 2018, Vargas almost scored a sensational upset when flooring Khan before losing wide on the scorecards. Benn, desperate to operate on the level that Khan stayed on for sustained periods, is fully aware of the threat posed by this weekend’s opponent.
"This is a big test, a big step up," revealed Benn to Sky Sports. “Can I do a better job than Khan, Vergil Ortiz, Danny Garcia, Errol Spence, Luis Collazo? When you beat a fighter, you gain their experience. This is a stepping stone in my career."
Vargas, who is no stranger to boxing’s big nights after partaking in a number of high-profile events, has repeatedly demonstrated red his confidence throughout the build-up. Despite Vargas’ boasts that his training camp with former world champions Clarence "Bones” Adams has provided him with the ideal preparations, Benn insists he is ready for whatever the veteran brings.
"The person in the other corner can think what he wants. Do I talk a good game? Of course I do, but I back it up every time. Think what you want, it won't make a difference when we get in there. Is he ready? Am I ready? He thinks I'm scared? It won't matter.
"I don't worry about what he does. He's fought so much that there won't be much adaption or change. He will bring the heat like he always does. I'll find a way to win. I'll match and better whatever he brings."
Benn vs. Vargas airs live on Sky Sports in the UK and Ireland and on DAZN everywhere else except Australia, New Zealand and China.
