Canelo Alvarez dared to be great on Saturday in Las Vegas. Unfortunately for him, he encountered only his second professional loss, and his first in eight-and-a-half years, while challenging light-heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol.
The DAZN digital media team have had such a difficult time agreeing on a definitive top-10 list after many big boxing contests, due to just how many fighters have made a great case for being included. And the top three, specifically, was no exception other than Canelo sitting at the very top after becoming undisputed super-middleweight champion on top of all his other world title wins in other divisions, including 175lbs in the past.
While some on social media felt his defeat to Bivol should lead to a nosedive down the charts, one setback in a very big endeavour doesn't change the rest of his resume. However, it does mean that for the first time in a very long time, the Mexican is no longer top of DAZN's P4P top 10.
Who has replaced him? Well, he has actually dropped to third for the time being, because the choices for 2nd and 3rd, respectively, were themselves absolutely neck-and-neck in the eyes of the decision-makers. Now top of the charts — and only just — sits Oleksandr Usyk, with Terence Crawford breathing down his neck at 3rd.
Bivol himself makes his debut at sixth, with his unbeaten record and now a huge name on his resume making his presence hard to argue. He could in the future crack the top 5, too — especially if he were to beat Canelo decisively once more, or conquer the winner of the upcoming light-heavyweight unification between Artur Beterbiev and Joe Smith Jr.
Meanwhile, Vasiliy Lomachenko once again dips just beneath the line between 10 and 11, amidst the possibility that his professional career could be on hold for the foreseeable future. Shakur Stevenson, whose unification dominance over Oscar Valdez last month earned him his maiden spot on the list, holds onto tenth.
