Undisputed super middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez defended his titles when he went to battle with Jaime Munguia on Saturday night.
The Mexico vs. Mexico showdown was the highlight of Cinco de Mayo weekend in Las Vegas, NV. Alvarez ran through Munguia through much of the 12-round affair, knocking down his opponent in the fourth with an explosive left hand-right uppercut combination en route to a unanimous decision victory. Judges inside the T-Mobile Arena scored it 117-110, 116-111 and 115-112 in Alvarez's favor.
Much of the buildup of the fight was due to the rivalry between Canelo and his former friend and promoter Oscar De La Hoya and notching a win over De La Hoya’s fighter was likely an extra incentive.
“That’s why I’m the best,” Alvarez said in the ring after the fight.
Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs) came into the bout on a three-fight win streak with recent victories over Jermell Charlo, John Ryder, and Gennadiy Golovkin.
Munguia stepped in to his toughest test to date when he faced off with one of the greatest boxers of all time and was able to survive through the 12-contested rounds. Munguia (43-1, 34 KOs) suffered the first loss of his professional career in the defeat.
