One of the biggest fights to make in boxing is a trilogy bout between Saúl "Canelo" Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin.
The first fight went to a controversial split draw in September 2017, and Alvarez won a closely contested rematch by majority decision the following September. Rumors have surfaced that a trilogy fight could take place later in 2020, but nothing is for sure due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That didn't stop Alvarez's head trainer, Eddy Reynoso, from proclaiming on an Instagram Live chat with ESPN Knockout that if Alvarez and Golovkin lock horns to settle the score, then his fighter will leave no doubt who the better fighter is.
"If that fight comes to fruition, Canelo with Golovkin (the third one) will undoubtedly win by knockout," Reynoso said. "We are going to look for the fight like in the second, from the beginning, to try to put it back, but this time things are going to be very different, this time we are going to knock him out, we promise it to all the people who believe in us."
After the sequel with Golovkin, Alvarez has only competed once at middleweight, a unanimous decision victory over Daniel Jacobs in May 2019. Before then, Alvarez moved up to 168 pounds in December 2018 on the first bout of his landmark 11-fight $365 million deal with DAZN and stopped Rocky Fielding by third-round TKO to win the WBA (Regular) super middleweight title. Then in November of last year, Alvarez jumped up two weight classes to light heavyweight and knocked out Sergey Kovalev in the 11th-round to become the IBF champion.
From the looks of things, Alvarez's days at middleweight are numbered. Reynoso feels the same way and thinks Alvarez will be making a permanent move to super middleweight sooner rather than later.
"Right now, I think he is going to give us nothing more for two (fights)," Reynoso said. "We want to fight Golovkin at 160 pounds. We are going to see later if there is anything good left at 160, and if not, we are going to raise it to 168 pounds. Saúl has become more emboldened over the years, and at 168 we are going to make a lot of noise."
