Canelo on possible GGG trilogy: 'That fight will be for the people'

Canelo on possible GGG trilogy: 'That fight will be for the people'DAZN
Canelo Alvarez isn't worried in the slightest bit about Gennadiy Golovkin.
Canelo Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin fought in September 2017 and one year later in 2018. The first fight went to a split draw, with the consensus being "GGG" should have gotten the nod. The sequel was one of the best fights of that year, with Canelo winning a majority decision.

Nearly four years later, the trilogy still hasn't happened. But now, it's closer than ever. Golovkin held his end by stopping Ryoto Murata in the ninth round to retain the IBF middleweight title and added the WBA (super) belt to his collection. Alvarez didn't watch the entire fight but saw highlights of it.

"He did what he's supposed to do," Alvarez said of Golovkin's performance Wednesday on a media conference call with a few reporters, including DAZN. "He looked strong like always."

An Alvarez win on Saturday, May 7, from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas against WBA (super) light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol live on DAZN PPV (check for Canelo vs. Bivol on DAZN in your country) means the highly eager trilogy will take place.

For Alvarez (57-1-2, 39 KOs), the fight with Bivol is about solidifying his legacy. A third fight with his fiercest rival, not so much.

“I’m hundred-percent focused on Bivol, but I don’t care about the fight with Golovkin,” Alvarez said. “I’m a hundred percent focusing on the Bivol fight, and then we’ll see. But the people want to see that fight, right? That fight will be for the people.”

When pressed to give more of an opinion of Golovkin's performance in an entertaining fight, boxing's pound-for-pound king didn't want to give too much credit.

“I’m not impressed,” Alvarez said. “But he looked good. He looked strong. But I’m never impressed. So, I’m never impressed about him. I know what he do, and I know he’s a strong fighter. I know what kind of fighter he is, but I’m not impressed because I know.”
