Charlo demolishes Rosario to become unified junior middleweight champ, Charlo outboxes Derevyanchenko for unanimous decision

Charlo demolishes Rosario to become unified junior middleweight champ, Charlo outboxes Derevyanchenko for unanimous decisionDAZN
Jermell Charlo blasted Jeison Rosario with an eighth-round KO to become the unified world junior middleweight champ, while Jermall Charlo defended his WBC middleweight title with a unanimous decision over Sergiy Derevyanchenko.

Now that's how you punctuate a twin billing.

Jermell Charlo blasted Jeison Rosario with an eighth-round KO to snatch the WBA and IBF junior middleweight titles and add them to his own WBC strap early Sunday morning at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. Jermell now owns three out of the four major world titles in the division, having made a statement just like his identical twin, Jermall, did late Saturday night in their doubleheader. WBO titleholder Patrick Teixeira is the only other world champ at 154 pounds, and a fight with him would mark the missing piece for a shot at undisputed glory.

"Leave me alone at 154," Jermell said on the Showtime pay-per-view. "I'm the man."

Jermell's performance capped a Charlo clean sweep, as Jermall got the doubleheader started with a unanimous decision (116-112, 117-111 and 118-110) win over Sergiy Derevyanchenko to retain his WBC middleweight championship.

Jermell didn't waste time producing fireworks against Rosario, as he dropped the Dominican fighter with a left hook on top of the head in the first round and used the same punch to make him taste the canvas again in the sixth. Then, 21 seconds into the eighth round, Jermell shot a power jab to the stomach and knocked Rosario out. Rosario remained flat on his back for several seconds after being counted out by referee Harvey Dock.

Earlier, Jermall outboxed Derevyanchenko by asserting the jab early, controlling the distance masterfully and continuing to use the jab to bank rounds. Although Derevyanchenko fought back with gritty inside work during the middle of the fight, Jermall stayed composed and made sure to never abandon the jab, as he reverted to the punch and opened up his offense enough to stagger the rugged contender a couple of times before riding to the victory on the scorecards and passing a major test in the twins' first pay-per-view outing.

The back-to-back Charlo statements helped put the middleweight and junior middleweight divisions on further notice of their wrath.

"Dreams do come true and I believe this is part of my dream and part of my destiny," Jermell said. "My twin brother is excited. We're going to go do our bubble turn-up. He's my biggest fan. I love him to death.

"We're getting ready to take over," he added. "We're the new era of boxing."

Altogether, the doubleheader boasted five world title fights. Here's how both three-fight cards went.

Jermell Charlo demolishes Jeison Rosario with eighth-round KO

(All times Eastern)

Round 8: BOOM! Just like that! Charlo snaps a jab to the stomach, and Rosario falls in a heap. Dock counts Rosario out. It's over! Jermell Charlo is the unified junior middleweight champ!

Round 7: Rosario working to get his legs back, but Charlo isn't helping with his power jab, which keeps finding a home. Rosario better watch out for Charlo's left hook, which has dropped him twice already. Charlo splits Rosario's guard with the left jab and then clobbers the body with a right hook. Rosario is still moving forward, though, as he tries to dig back into the bout. (10-9 Charlo, 68-64 Charlo)

1:18 a.m.: Was just about to say that Rosario recovered nicely from that first-round knockdown when Charlo dropped him for the second time.

Round 6: Charlo going back to pumping that left jab. He swings and misses on a wild overhand right. Referee Harvey Dock separates the fighters and warns Rosario about repeated low blows. Rosario pops Charlo's head back with a jab. Fiery exchange breaks out, with both champs landing. Charlo hits Rosario hard with a short left hook. Rosario's legs are jelly, and he crumbles slowly to the canvas for a second knockdown. Rosario beats the count and survives the round, but he's hurt. (10-8 Charlo, 58-55 Charlo)

Round 5: Rosario lands a stiff left hook, but Charlo responds with a solid left hook of his own. Rosario is stalking Charlo and walking the WBC champ down. He's taking the fight to Charlo and not giving him any breathing room. Rosario digs an uppercut into Charlo's chest. Charlo brushes Rosario back with a stiff right. Charlo then catches Rosario with a left as the unified champ comes in. But Rosario had himself a solid round there. (10-9 Rosario, 48-46 Charlo)

Round 4: Rosario now going to the body, but Charlo fires back with three unanswered jabs. Charlo splits Rosario's guard with a jab and splits it again with a sweeping left hand. The power jab is a weapon for Charlo against Rosario, just like it was for brother, Jermall, against Sergiy Derevyanchenko earlier in the night. Rosario with a chopping right hand late, but Charlo takes the round. (10-9 Charlo, 39-36 Charlo)

Round 3: Charlo opens up throwing shots at Rosario's body. Rosario clubs Charlo with a left moments later. Charlo now finding success splitting Rosario's guard with a jab right down the middle. Rosario connects on a stinging left, before adding a combination for good measure. (10-9 Rosario, 29-27 Charlo)

Round 2: Charlo comes out of the corner keeping that pressure on Rosario, as he rocks Rosario with a left hook to the body before bringing the same punch upstairs. Rosario with a combination that lands. He definitely has power, but Charlo seems like the quicker fighter. Charlo doubles up on a left hook to drive Rosario back. Rosario seemingly recovered from the knockdown for a much better round, but Charlo did enough work to take this round, too. (10-9 Charlo, 20-17 Charlo)

Round 1: Charlo rocks Rosario's body with a right hook. Seconds later, he drops Rosario! It came on a left hook that clipped him on top of the head. It might have thrown off Rosario's equilibrium. Now, Charlo with a right-left combo that lands as well. He also adds a left hook for good measure. All Charlo so far. (10-8 Charlo)

12:52 a.m.: The champs have been introduced and this fight is seconds away.

12:48 a.m.: And here comes the WBC junior middleweight champ, Jermell Charlo, who comes out to the sounds of Big Sean's "Don Life."

Luis Nery edges Aaron Alameda in unanimous decision to become the new WBC junior featherweight champion

12:32 a.m.: Judges have it 115-113, 116-112 and 118-110 all in favor of the winner and new WBC junior featherweight champion, Luis Nery. The decision was well deserved, although when Alameda reviews this fight, he'll be kicking himself for not letting his hands go enough. He could have really hurt Nery with his left hand and would have tagged him more by taking a step back as Nery charged forward.

12:30 a.m.: Let's see how judges scored this one.

Round 12:  The fighters touch gloves as a sign of respect. Neither fighter is holding back. This is the first time either boxer is in the 12th round. Nery showing more urgency early on, as he stalks Alameda and swings away at the body. He's pressuring Alameda and wearing him down, but Alameda fires back with the triple jab. Nery is relentless moving forward. Some of his shots are landing. Others are missing. Yet, he keeps moving forward. Alameda needs to throw more shots. Nery leaves his head exposed moving in and Alameda tags him with a right hook. Alameda lands the punch yet again seconds later. They briefly exchange fire before the final bell. Nery smothered Alameda that round enough to take it and the fight. (10-9 Nery, 116-112 Nery)

Round 11: Alameda with a right-left combination that lands. He adds a right after evading Nery's punches. He is really coming alive and showing urgency. Alameda now misses on the right, but lands a left behind it. Solid work from Alameda. Nery coming on strong late, but Alameda returns  just enough fire to eke out the round. (10-9 Alameda, 106-103 Nery)

Round 10: Alameda with a stinging combination, punctuating it with that left hand. That's the punch he needs to throw more. Nery continues to move forward and work the body in close quarters. Ironically, Nery hasn't looked all the way like himself, but is still winning this fight. Alameda is still hanging tough, as he unleashes an uppercut and double jab. He snaps Nery's head back with a splintering uppercut again moments later. Great round for Alameda. Can he build on it to snag the win? (10-9 Alameda, 97-93 Nery)

Round 9: Alameda's jab is still there as an effective weapon, but there's not much behind it, and that's when Nery gets inside and unleashes his combos. Alameda is going to get drowned out by punches if he doesn't increase his volume to match Nery's. Nery with three straight left-right combinations, as he's moving Alameda around each time, giving him a taste of his own medicine. (10-9 Nery, 88-83 Nery)

12:15 a.m.: Meanwhile, Jermell Charlo looks ultra-focused in his locker room.

View post on Twitter

Round 8: Alameda's corner tells him he's not punching enough. Let's see how he responds here. Nery remains the busier fighter more than halfway through the round. Alameda needs to let his hands go more freely or he's going to lose more rounds and find himself searching for a knockout late. Nery peppers Alameda with a three-punch combo, before missing wildly and getting countered. Nery can't let his aggression get the best of him, with that last sequence being a stern reminder of that. (10-9 Nery, 78-74 Nery)

Round 7: Nery bashes Alameda with a right hook, before Alameda returns fire with a left hook. For some inexplicable reason, Alameda has stopped using the left hand that was an effective punch for him earlier. He should return to it. The fighters exchange fire, with Nery getting the slight edge. He's also moving forward and trying to assert himself, as he buries punches in Alameda's midsection to slow him down. Both are undefeated fighters. (10-9 Nery, 68-65 Nery)

Round 6: Nery picking up the pace early, feinting as he works his way inside to escape Alameda's jab and movement. Nery is picking up his aggression by ripping the body with left and right hooks. When Alameda raises his shoulder, Nery happily plants punches there, too. (10-9 Nery, 58-56 Nery)

Round 5: Alameda caught Nery with a few stinging lefts before Nery came on strong late. The late burst was effective, but Alameda did just enough behind his jab and left hand to take the round. (10-9 Alameda, 48-47 Nery)

12:00 a.m.: Nery and Alameda haven't hurt each other with anything significant just yet, but the pace continues to pick up.

Round 4: Nery moving forward with crunching right and left hooks to the body. Nery lands a combination and adds a stinging left hand to follow. He's walking Alameda down, trying to establish the jab and just scored on a four-punch combo. Good work from Nery here. (10-9 Nery, 39-37 Nery)

Round 3: Alameda is doing a great job right now of peppering Nery with the jab and turning his body immediately after the punch lands to force Nery to move as well. It's sort of keeping Nery off balance. Nery, though, is piecing together combinations as he works inside. And now an uptick of Nery working the body as well. (10-9 Nery, 29-28 Nery)

Round 2: Alameda with a much better job standing his ground, while pumping the jab. (10-9 Alameda, 19-19)

Round 1: Nery and Alameda aren't wasting time feeling each other out, as they're already letting loose and letting punches fly. Nery with some lightning-quick combinations early to combat Alameda's power jab. (10-9 Nery)

11:30 p.m.: Roman will now have the opportunity to face the winner of the next fight between Luis Nery and Aaron Alameda. Nery and Alameda are vying for the vacant WBC junior featherweight title.

Danny Roman defeats Juan Carlos Payano by unanimous decision; Junior featherweight

11:28 p.m.: All three judges score it 116-112 in favor of Daniel Roman.

View post on Twitter

11:24 p.m.: Wow! Roman drops Payano with a left hook almost simultaneously with the bell to end the fight. If it was just inside the bell, then it should have counted as a knockdown for Roman and that knockdown would have triggered a 10-8 round, likely pushing him to victory. Now, it will go to the scorecards. Some late fireworks negated, with drama entering the decision. The fight was an absolute war, as neither fighter gave his opponent an inch. Let's see how judges score it.

11:15 p.m.: Payano is sporting a cut on his left eye that's bothering him in the 10th. Though he's been taking punishment, especially to the body, Payano keeps fighting. A replay shows that they indeed butted heads. That could have caused the gash on Payano's left eye.

11:00 p.m.: Roman and Payano have just been teeing off on each other without holding back at all through six rounds.

10:47 p.m.: Blood on the forehead of Payano in the third round here. The cut could have been opened up by a headbutt.

10:37 p.m.: This bout to kick off the second fight card tonight is underway, as Roman and Payano are each vying for position with a high volume of punching.

10:30 p.m.: We're minutes away at this point.

10:20 p.m.: The Jermell Charlo-Jeison Rosario three-fight card, as the second part of this doubleheader, is next. Kicking off this card will be Danny Roman vs. Juan Carlos Payano in junior featherweight action. This is the only fight tonight that isn't for a world title.

10:00 p.m.: We're still in intermission between doubleheaders. Jermall Charlo did his part, laying the groundwork for a Charlo clean sweep tonight. Let's see how Jermell responds later tonight.

Jermall Charlo outboxes Sergiy Derevyanchenko for unanimous decision to retain WBC middleweight title

9:45 p.m.:  We enter a 30-minute intermission, before the Jermell Charlo-Jeison Rosario three-fight card next!

9:35 p.m.: The scores are in, as judges saw it 116-112, 117-111 and 118-110 all in favor of the winner ... and still champion via unanimous decision, Jermall Charlo.

9:30 p.m.: Derevyanchenko, in pure desperation mode, is moving forward and unleashing every punch left in his bag.

Round 12: Boxers touch gloves, before resuming their spirited scrap. The champ digs into Derevyanchenko's body with a left hook and tacks on a left hook upstairs as well. Charlo unloads on an overhand right moments later that lands as well. Derevyanchenko is letting loose on every punch he has left. But unless he gets a knockout, Charlo has done more than enough to cruise to the win on the cards. Ten seconds left, as Derevyanchenko is unloading on Charlo. That's the bell! Both men touch gloves once again as a sign of respect. (10-9 Derevyanchenko, 116-112 Charlo)

View post on Twitter

Round 11: Derevyanchenko's eyes look like they're swollen shut as he comes out of his corner. Derevyanchenko needs a knockout or at least a knockdown to have a chance here. Charlo now going to the body with that jab and then adds a big left hook moments later. Derevyanchenko keeps pressing forward, though, with inside shots. Derevyanchenko and Charlo trade hooks that land. Derevyanchenko is nicknamed "The Technician," but Charlo has been the better boxer this fight. The 12th and final round is next. (10-9 Charlo, 107-102 Charlo)

Round 10: Doctor checks on Derevyanchenko's eye before the action resumes. He's going to have to get back inside to have any shot here. Otherwise, the champ will jab his way to victory at this pace. Derevyanchenko getting inside again and unloading, but Charlo responds with a triple jab. Derevyanchenko comes back with a strong right hand that bounces off the champ's head. This round was close, with the slightest nod going to the challenger. (10-9 Derevyanchenko, 97-93 Charlo)

Round 9: Derevyanchenko is working through the swelling, but one has to wonder how much of a toll it is taking. Charlo with a crisp left-right combination that snaps Derevyanchenko's head back. Moments later, he brushes the challenger back with that jab yet again. Charlo works in a left uppercut when Derevyanchenko tries to swarm him. A left hook from the challenger lights Derevyanchenko up. Charlo did a great job keeping space and preventing Derevyanchenko from getting inside for a majority of this round. (10-9 Charlo, 88-83 Charlo)

View post on Twitter

Round 8: Right hand lands for Charlo, and he adds a left for good measure. Derevyanchenko's face is swelling up pretty bad, but he unloads a counter left hook to answer the champ's jab. Derevyanchenko is attacking the body well, and the champ seems to have gotten hurt from that barrage on inside work. The round looked to be Derevyanchenko's, but Charlo buckled the challenger's knees with a huge right late and added a left hook seconds later to steal the frame. (10-9 Charlo, 78-74 Charlo)

Round 7: Charlo goes back to the power jab, but Derevyanchenko briefly staggers the champ with a right. Charlo, though, is still on the attack this round and letting loose with his left hand that's finding its mark. Derevyanchenko lands a solid left hook with Charlo pressed up against the ropes, but the champ didn't budge at all. He just absorbs it. Moments later, he lands a left hook and goes back to the jab. Charlo's uppercut follows. Charlo lands another uppercut and Derevyanchenko lands a left hook to end this all-action seventh. (10-9 Charlo, 68-65 Charlo)

Round 6: Derevyanchenko opens the round with more urgency and punch volume, now attacking Charlo's body. He adds a lead right hand moments later and digs a right into the champ's body. Solid boxing from the challenger now. Derevyanchenko gets inside and plants a right on Charlo's head. Charlo isn't budging, though. Derevyanchenko with good pressure this round, as Charlo is having a harder time pumping his jab. Both fighters letting loose in the phonebooth and connecting, with some extracurricular activity after the bell. (10-9 Derevyanchenko, 58-56 Charlo)

Round 5: Charlo is stalking Derevyanchenko and that right uppercut is really flying now. The champ is doing a great job controlling the real estate in the ring. Derevyanchenko fighting back, connecting on a couple of shots, including a right hook that bounces off Charlo's head. Derevyanchenko has a cut under his eye now, but he's smothering Charlo inside. This has been his best work yet, as he lands a sharp right and left hook combination to take the round. (10-9 Derevyanchenko, 49-46 Charlo)

9:00 p.m.: Charlo has been ultra-impressive thus far. He's poised and in control, looking every bit like the champ he is.

Round 4: Derevyanchenko, with urgency, comes out of his corner and unleashes a quick combo. He's doing a better job of getting inside and trying to muddy this fight a bit. Still, Charlo is able to revert to the jab. Charlo lands a short uppercut that seems to hurt Derevyanchenko. The challenger responds with a quick combo seconds later. A better round for Derevyanchenko, but Charlo unleashes a right uppercut with some mustard on it to keep the rugged challenger at bay. (10-9 Charlo, 40-36 Charlo)

Round 3: Charlo is very accurate with his left jab. It keeps splitting Derevyanchenko's guard and landing flush. Derevyanchenko must get inside of the champ's reach. Charlo with a left jab, right hand and right uppercut. Charlo is smooth and composed right now. Derevyanchenko gets inside, as the fighters trade left hooks. Charlo is opening up with his arsenal. The jab has paved the way so far. A right hook lands for the champ now, too. A hard right hook to the head makes Derevyanchenko stumble late. Charlo swarms him and adds a left hook, as the bell rings. A few more seconds and Charlo might have dropped Derevyanchenko. (10-9 Charlo, 30-27 Charlo)

Round 2: Derevyanchenko now showing nice bounce in his step as he tries to work inside. However, Charlo adjusts and keeps that jab long, using his reach advantage. Charlo pumps two left jabs and lets the right hand loose. Derevyanchenko counters with a right and adds a jab of his own. Now, Derevyanchenko makes Charlo eat another jab. Nice left hook by Derevyanchenko as well. A closer round, with the slight edge going to the champ. (10-9 Charlo, 20-18 Charlo)

Round 1: Both fighters feeling each other out over the first minute, with Charlo trying to assert the jab. He digs a jab into Derevyanchenko's body. Derevyanchenko going for a combination that partially lands seconds later. The left jab seems to be a good weapon already for Charlo and he uses it to set up a stiff right hand late. Derevyanchenko with a strong right hand to catch the champ's attention over the waning seconds. Tactical first round in this high-stakes fight. (10-9 Charlo)

8:42 p.m.: Each fighter has been formally introduced. This main event is seconds away!

8:39 p.m.: Derevyanchenko in the ring and here comes the champ, Jermall Charlo, walking out to the sounds of Travis Scott's "Franchise." Seems like Charlo might also be taking shots at the WBC "Franchise" middleweight champ, Saul "Canelo" Alvarez with that song selection.

8:30 p.m.: At 23, Figueroa seems to have a bright future ahead of him. That was a solid showing. Up next, the first of two main events on this twin bill, as Jermall Charlo is set to defend his WBC middleweight title against top contender Sergiy Derevyanchenko. We know who Damian Lillard is riding with: "Lions Only."

Brandon Figueroa secures 10th-round TKO against Damien Vazquez to defend WBA "Regular" junior featherweight title

Round 10: Figueroa again opening up the round with a looping left hook that connects. Then, he goes back to the body. Vazquez is valiantly trying to fight back, but he's taking a beating. Figueroa has Vazquez on the ropes, as he buries a right hook to the body and bangs a left hook to the body to follow. And that's it! The ref stops the bout appropriately. Vazquez was taking plenty of punishment. The stoppage was more than justified. The champ landed 48 percent of his power shots.

View post on Twitter

Round 9: Figueroa is just teeing off on Vazquez at this point, especially with overhand lefts, which are landing with bad intentions. Seconds later, he lands a right flush to the face. The champ is in full control and pouring on the offense. If Figueroa keeps this up, the fight won't go the distance. (10-9 Figueroa, 87-84 Figueroa)

Round 8: Figueroa wraps a sweeping right hook around Vazquez's guard that lands right on the jaw. And he's punching away now. Figueroa hurts Vazquez with a left hand to the head, and he's blasting him up against the ropes now. Vazquez is getting pummeled and goes to the clinch. A dominant round for the champ. (10-9 Figueroa, 77-75 Figueroa)

Round 7: Figueroa splits Vazquez's guard with a right hand. Figueroa is backing Vazquez down, seemingly asserting his will on the game challenger. Strong left hook from Vazquez, as he shows the champ that he has plenty of fight in him. A very sharp right lands for Figueroa, before the champ goes back to digging into the body. But the challenger might have taken this round slightly. (10-9 Vazquez, 67-66 Figueroa)

Round 6: A quick combination followed by a crisp right hand has Vazquez retreating a bit. Yet, the challenger keeps pumping his jab. Swelling under the right eye of Vazquez now. But a better round for the challenger as he reverted to the jab that was working for him earlier. Close frame, with the slightest edge going to Vazquez. (10-9 Vazquez, 58-56 Figueroa)

Round 5: Figueroa opens the round swinging away at the body with thudding shots. Vazquez clinches, perhaps indicating that Figueroa's bodywork is taking its toll on the challenger. Figueroa, still, must be careful about the way he's moving in. Far too often, he's leaving his chin exposed, and Vazquez is happy to oblige with a raking left hook across the jaw. Vazquez's pace has slowed down, though. (10-9 Figueroa, 49-46 Figueroa)

8:00 p.m.: This 122-pound title fight has been all-action in the pocket thus far, entering the fifth round.

Round 4: Figueroa working the body, but Vazquez responds with a left uppercut that lands sharply. Figueroa is steadily moving forward now, having established the jab. His body work is also helping. However, the high volume of punches is still there for Vazquez. Figueroa backing up Vazquez against the ropes and punching away. Is he finally going to slow Vazquez's frenzied pace? Not yet, as Vazquez buries a hard left across the champ's jaw. Still, the champ did enough to take the round. (10-9 Figueroa, 39-37 Figueroa)

Round 3: Vazquez is doing a nice job leading with the jab and connecting with his right. Figueroa now ripping shots to the body, hoping to stall the challenger's engine. Figueroa digs in and finds Vazquez's chin for a left uppercut. The champ landed some nice power shots, but Vazquez was once again the busier boxer. (10-9 Figueroa, 29-28 Figueroa)

Round 2: Vazquez triple jabs the champ, while moving around him, although Figueroa is moving better early this round. Vazquez has landed 35 percent of his punches to Figueroa's 33 percent about halfway through the second round. He's showing the champ that he could match output with a similar busy motor. That being said, Figueroa is ending this round strongly, as he's piecing together combinations including a three-punch combo. That's enough late work to snag the round. (10-9 Figueroa, 19-19)

Round 1: Vazquez standing his ground and boxing well. Two minutes in and this is already an all-action, phonebooth fight. A close round with both fighters teeing off on each other inside, but Vazquez catching the champ with a strong left. What a dynamic start to this title bout. (10-9 Vazquez)

7:37 p.m.: Brandon Figueroa puts his WBA "Regular" junior featherweight title on the line against Damien Vazquez next, with both fighters about to make their walks to the ring.

John Riel Casimero blasts Duke Micah with third-round TKO to retain WBO bantamweight title

7:30 p.m.: Casimero is tagging Micah at will now like it's target practice. And these shots are thudding blows. Casimero bends Micah at the waist with a left hook to the body and then blasts him with a blistering right uppercut. Referee Steve Willis steps in and ends the punishment. It's a wrap! Casimero dominates his way to victory to retain the title.

View post on Twitter

7:25 p.m.: Casimero drops Micah with a left hook to the temple. Micah beats the count but is in bad shape. Moments later, Casimero drops his hands and connects on a sharp uppercut. Micah's legs are jelly. He should hold onto Casimero. Micah slips to the mat and actually buys a few valuable seconds doing so. That's the bell to end the round, which belonged to the champ fully.

7:23 p.m.: Casimero and Micah with a frenetic pace during that opening round, with the challenger catching the champion's attention by burying a left to the body followed by a stiff right cross on the jaw.

7:10: p.m.: The first bout, which kicks off the Jermall Charlo-Sergiy Derevyanchenko three-fight card, will have John Riel Casimero putting his WBO bantamweight title on the line against Duke Micah. Altogether, tonight's cards boast five world title bouts.
