Chris Billam-Smith wants to recreate Froch vs. Groves rivalry with next title fight

Chris Billam-Smith wants to recreate Froch vs. Groves rivalry with next title fightDAZN
The WBO champion is planning a return to action.

Chris Billam-Smith is aiming to recreate a rivalry on a par with Groves vs. Froch when he sets up a fight with Richard Riakporhe.

Billam-Smith is the WBO world cruiserweight champion and Riakporhe is the No. 1 challenger for the governing body, and speaking to Sky Sports, ‘The Gentleman’ revealed that the two fighters are planning on running it back.

"We're just working on it now. Where and when," he told Sky Sports.

"I'm looking forward to us getting it over the line and getting it announced. I'm really, really excited about that fight."

The pair have already fought before, back in 2019, but the 33-year-old champion has improved in the interim, and explained that a rematch appeals in part because he remembers some of the old all-British grudge matches.

"I've always wanted to be in big domestic fights and my career's proven that. My good mate George Groves, obviously being a massive fan of him, watching him in the [James] DeGale and the [Carl] Froch fights, he said.

Groves fought and beat DeGale in 2011, but lost consecutive world title fights to Froch, first in November 2013 and then May the following year.

He continued: "They're the [kind of] fights that always get remembered and that's the fights you get into boxing for, when you're a fan, is watching those big fights, those rivalries. They're usually domestic rivalries.

"They're the fights you want to be in. But also he's earned his shot. Some people think he can beat me and I look forward to proving them wrong."

“Because I make my own decisions, I know how to get the business contracts done, I do the biggest PPVs, and I’m my own boss so I can move and go wherever I want. So yes, I am the new Floyd in this sport, and yes, everybody wants to fight me.”
