Daniel Dubois had to ensure constant taunts from Jarrell 'Big Baby' Miller in the build-up to their bout on the Day Of Reckoning card beneath big-name fellow heavyweights such as Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder, most of which branding him a "quitter".
However not only did the Londoner gain revenge in the form of a stoppage win in the 10th and final round, but he did so on the back of a performance that showed an ability to persevere, adapt and overcome.
"It really mattered tonight, I had to dig deep," said Dubois moments after becoming the first man to halt the American.
"I'm glad I came through it. I showed my heart.
"I'm a prideful fighter and I always wanna come forwards but I learn new things every day. I had my dad screaming at me in my corner and I knew I had to get out there and work.
"I had to prove to myself that I was a real fighter and I could be a champion. I had to finish strong and I always look for the knockout but all respect Big Baby, he gave me a good fight and I've got a friend for life.
"I wanna fight all the best fighters and the confidence that might have been missing before, I gained it back tonight."
Miller, who taunted Dubois multiple times in the final round as the Englishman began to turn the screw and look for the finish that came eight seconds before the final bell, immediately took back his harsh words post-fight.
"Triple D, you've got my motherf---ing respect boy," he told Dubois directly. "All respect to Daniel D, he's no quitter."
