The fallout from Oleksandr Usyk's successful world heavyweight title defence against Daniel Dubois with the latter's team launching an official appeal to the WBA following a controversial low blow call.
The fight, which took place on August 26 in Poland, saw Usyk stop Dubois in the ninth round, but the main talking was in round five where a body shot from the British challenger floored Usyk. Referee Luis Pabon then deemed the punch a low blow and instead allowed Usyk the allotted five minutes to recover.
This decision sparked fury from Dubois' team including promoter Frank Warren and trainer Don Charles, and now an appeal has been confirmed as per the WBA's X account.
"Daniel Dubois' team sent a formal appeal for last August 26 fight, in which he lost by knockout in 9 rounds against Oleksandr Usyk in Wrocław, Poland," the WBA's statement read.
"The WBA, now that it has received a formal appeal from Dubois' team, will proceed with a review as per the regulations. Any decision made regarding this situation will be made under WBA rules and communicated in a timely and appropriate manner."
If the appeal is successful, there maybe a chance that Usyk and Dubois will meet in a rematch which would scupper any immediate hopes of an undisputed fight between the Ukrainian and WBC title holder Tyson Fury.
