Dave Coldwell enjoyed many great highs when serving as the trainer of Tony Bellew on his way to cruiserweight and heavyweight glory.
The Sheffield trainer was a vital part of Bellew’s success, and he’s now revealed that his former charge was close to a comeback in 2023.
Lukasz Rozanski is the current WBC bridgerweight champion and he’ll defend his title against Lawrence Okolie this Friday.
The Polish fighter was a serious target of Bellew and Coldwell believes he was the ideal opponent for a potential Bellew return.
“It was a conversation that was a possibility, and it never really went anywhere,” said Coldwell when speaking to BoxingScene.
“I’m not behind him coming back, full stop. But, with that fight, that one opponent, and for what he wanted to do, it was a case of let’s get back in the gym, let’s see where you’re at.”
