Former WBC champion Deontay Wilder still intends to fight current holder Tyson Fury this December, according to his manager.
Wilder and Fury had been expected to fight in Las Vegas on December 19 to bring to a close a trilogy of fights between the pair.
They last fought in February 2020 when Fury emerged the victor, but the coronavirus pandemic has forced two dates to be rescheduled, and Fury has since claimed that Wilder’s camp asked for another postponement. The 32-year-old Briton then announced he was ‘moving on’ from the fight.
Fury’s co-promoter Frank Warren is attempting to set up a fight for his client on 5 December, with Top Rank chief, and Fury’s other co-promoter Bob Arum suggested that a candidate will soon be chosen.
Last week Wilder’s manager Shelly Finkel refused to accept that the contract between the boxers was voided, and has since told World Boxing News: “Deontay Wilder is fighting Tyson Fury in December. We are working on that fight.”
Agit Kabayel and Carlos Takam are the two likeliest contenders to face Fury in December. Should Fury successfully negotiate the fight he is expected to face Anthony Joshua in 2021.
