Eddie Hearn believes Devin Haney is running out of time for a fighter to come forward for a September fight.
The WBC lightweight champion has seen one mandatory challenger, Ryan Garcia, focus on other potential opponents before stepping back from the sport, while JoJo Diaz appears more interested in being Garcia’s comeback fight.
The 22-year-old champion last fought in May against Jorge Linares, but there appears to be no imminent title defence on the cards.
Speaking on the DAZN Boxing Show, Hearn said he is waiting for someone to step forward after earning a shot at the title.
“Regarding Devin Haney, you know, I mean, again, as much as it baffles me people's comments about [Anthony Joshua],” Hearn said.
“It baffles me that all these guys that keep fighting final eliminators for Devin Haney never want to actually fight. So Jojo Diaz, you are mandatory for Devin Haney. So don't you want to fight for the world title or you want to fight Ryan Garcia instead?
“I think that Jojo Diaz will give up his mandatory position. And I think he will fight Ryan Garcia. That is what I honestly believe, if not, more than happy to make Devin against Jojo Diaz.”
He then suggested that Haney could move up to super lightweight if nobody was forthcoming.
“We need one of those top guys at 135,” he said. "Because sooner or later, you know, we got to make a move with Devin Haney in terms of the big fights. And that might even be moving into 140. You know, it’s that fight with Mikey Garcia or Regis Prograis. You know, we're in talks for that fight. I love Devin against those guys as well. But he's ready. He's ready to fight all those guys.”
