The new super lightweight champion had his say.

Devin Haney believes that he and his father, Bill, are not getting the recognition they deserve.

Bill has trained his son and guided him to be the undisputed lightweight champion with consecutive wins over George Kambosos Jr., and steered him to victory against former unified champion at 135lbs, Vasily Lomachenko.

Last night, live on DAZN, Haney moved up to super lightweight to take on the WBC champion, Regis Prograis, and came away with the belt in a one-sided clash that went the distance in San Francisco.

Speaking in his post-win press conference, Haney said that not only should he be declared fighter of the year for his achievements, but that his father should be similarly honoured.

He said: “I feel like at this point that I should be fighter of the year. They don’t want to give my dad credit but I think he should be trainer of the year. When they mention the best trainers in boxing, I don’t understand, because they never mention my dad.

“But he is the best trainer in boxing and it shows. We just went up in weight and fought arguably the best at 140, and didn’t get hit with anything.

“My dad deserves trainer of the year, and I deserve fighter of the year.”
