Eddie Hearn thinks that Devin Haney vs. Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis will not be made any time soon.
Haney defeated Regis Prograis at the weekend to become WBC champion at super lightweight after moving up at 135lbs, and speculation has already started not just on his next fight, but on his next weight class.
Speaking to Fight Hub TV, Hearn suggested that a move to welterweight is on the cards, saying: “The kid is so young. He’s gone to Australia, he’s beaten Kambosos, and he’s beaten Lomachenko. I know it was a close fight, but he really schooled Regis Prograis."
He added: “I could see him going to 147, winning world titles there. I don’t see anyone at 140 that beats him. His speed of foot and movement, Regis just couldn’t set. People say, ‘Regis should have thrown more.’ He was trying to get there to throw, and every time he goes to get there, Devin is over here, hitting him with three shots.
“I really like Regis’ honesty after the fight. ‘I couldn’t believe how good he was.’ You couldn’t say anything more than that. That’s the truth.”
Then he turned to a proposed fight with Davis, one of the biggest names in the lighter divisions.
He said: “When you look at Bill [Haney] and you look at [Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard] Ellerbe or if he’s even involved or Tank and the coaches, I feel like that’s a long way away, that fight.”
