Devin Haney has explained his move up to 140lbs as he prepares for a fight against Regis Prograis.
Prograis is the super lightweight champion for the WBC, and Haney was the undisputed lightweight champion before the decision to move up a weight class.
The pair are among the most dangerous fighters at the two weights, and the 24-year-old American Haney is coming off the back of a tight win over Ukraine’s Vasily Lomachenko.
Haney retains the WBO, WBA and IBF belts, and is the champion in recess for the WBC after he stepped up.
The pair of them fight on December 9, shown live on DAZN PPV, and speaking to BoxingScene.com, he gave some details on his decision.
“I feel like it’s the right time for me to move up,” Haney said.
“Every fight, you know, comes with its challenges. But my body was just – it was hard to make 135.
"I wanna see how I feel at 140. Obviously, I still have the belts at 135. You know, there’s still big fights at 135.
“But right now, it’s a chance for me to become a two-division champ at 140. No matter who it was, you know I was willing to fight whoever at 140.
"Regis stepped up to the plate and I feel like Regis is also the best guy at 140. So, I’m happy I’m going into my first fight at 140 against the guy I feel like is the best at 140.”
