The build-up to Devin Haney vs. Ryan Garcia has been wild to say the least, and one of the most-talked about incidents is the pre-fight bet made between the fighters pertaining to their respective weight.
On Thursday, Haney and Garcia agreed to a spur-of-the-moment wager of $500,000 per pound if either fighter went over the 140lbs limit. Friday's weigh-in showed Garcia 3.2lbs higher than the maximum allowed for a super lightweight bout, meaning he could not challenge for Haney's WBC title.
Additionally, the verbal agreement between the two men put Garcia on the hook for $1.5 million, and on Friday a social media post from Haney appeared to confirm that Garcia had honoured the hefty monetary terms.
Reacting to the news, veteran combat sports personality and DAZN boxing commentator Todd Grisham expressed surprise that Garcia appears to actually be paying the agreed-upon terms, and credited the 25-year-old for standing by his commitment.
"This may be the first time in the history of this sport that I’ve seen a fighter actually pay up on one of these 'press conference spur of the moment' handshake bets," Grisham wrote on X (formerly Twitter). "Say what you will about Ryan Garcia, but you got to tip your cap to him on this one."
