Eddie Hearn was insistent all fight week that Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez’ unification clash at super-flyweight with Juan Francisco Estrada was going to deliver and the face of Matchroom was true to his word. From the moment the first bell rang, those in attendance and viewers watching live exclusively on DAZN were treated to a stunning slugfest on Saturday that was eventually won via split decision by Estrada.
The anticipation surrounding this rematch following their first hellacious meeting in 2012 was scorching within the boxing community as two modern greats from the lower weight categories prepared to go at it. Estrada entered the bout as betting favourite due to his recent form, which included a win over the two-time conqueror of Gonzalez, Sor Rungvisai, but it was apparent early on that the crafty Nicaraguan was ready to fight fire with fire.
As Gonzalez seemingly built an early lead at the contest’s halfway point, Estrada, roared on by his corner, upped his industry in the fight’s second half and that work was recognised by the ringside judges. Following a frantic fight with a ridiculous amount of heavy exchanges, Estrada had his hand raised — but even in defeat, it was a performance that enhanced Gonzalez’ already lofty standing in the sport. Hearn, ringside in Texas, paid the fight the ultimate tribute on social media as the fighters nervously waited for the verdict.
“The best fight I have ever seen!! Could go either way.” tweeted Hearn, seconds after the final bell had sounded. Minutes later, the show promoter took to his Instagram page to pour even more praise on the pair’s efforts. “On behalf of boxing fans all around the world I want to say thank you to @galloestradaoficial and @chocolatito87 - that was the greatest fight I have ever watched live.”
With Hearn in attendance at a number of memorable bouts in recent years, such as Anthony Joshua-Wladimer Klitschko and Josh Taylor-Regis Prograis, Estrada and Gonzalez can consider themselves proud of their efforts in relation to the compliments from Hearn. Both men will have several options moving forward, but it’s unlikely that either man will be involved in a fight like the one they shared on March 13, 2021.
