The Jermell Charlo vs. Brian Castano fallout continues

Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn has said that incompetence is at the heart of poor scoring seen at fights such as Jermell Charlo vs Brian Castano.

Castano was given one card 114-113, a second was scored a 114-114 draw, while the third went to Charlo by a 117-111 margin. While most accepted that a tie was a reasonable outcome between the pair, many observers commented that the card in favour of Charlo lacked credibility.

Hearn told the DAZN Boxing Show that he “watched maybe four or five rounds of the fight,” but he commented on the exceptional third card.

“The issue, again, is the rogue scorecard. We get it all the time in the UK where sometimes there's a good fight. I mean, it sounds like most people had Castano winning by two or three rounds, or something like that. Therefore, if you get a draw, not great, but okay, it's a one round swing, but when there's a 117-111.

“There's not one other person in the entire world that would score it that way... not even Jermell Charlo.

“I honestly don't believe, because I work so deeply in this business, there's corruption in these scorecards. I but you have to ask yourself, what is it? Is it incompetence? Yes.

“But Nelson Vasquez has been watching fights, and judging fights for 20 years. So he should be more competent than me and all those other people watching it.

“What's the answer? We have it with a British Boxing Board of Control, officials, governing bodies, they love to back their own. Which is a nice thing, if you're an employee.

“But the problem is, it's happening again, again and again, and fight fans are gonna lose faith and you get a guy like Castano.

“You've gone into Charlo’s backyard, he should be walking out as undisputed champion, and a hero in Argentina.”
