Andy Cruz's impressive foray into professional boxing continued Saturday night as he outclassed Brayan Zamarripa in a unanimous decision victory on the undercard of Edgar Berlanga vs. Padraig McCrory.
It was just Cruz's third pro fight after a stellar amateur career that was punctuated by an Olympic gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Games, and the Cuban is already looking ahead to his next bout.
A potential rematch of the Olympic final against Keyshawn Davis is a bout that has been talked about in boxing circles, with Cruz's promoter Eddie Hearn stating on Saturday that he's prepared to make "a huge offer" to Davis' representatives.
If a Davis fight doesn't happen, the Matchroom boss has eyes on another fighter for Cruz.
"Angel Fierro," Hearn told IFL TV. "Great fighter, world No. 3."
Hearn explained that a bout against fighters the calibre of Davis or Fierro are what 28-year-old Cruz needs at this juncture of his career.
"He needs a really big fight now, because it's a bit boring," Hearn said. "It's so easy for him and these fights are just mismatches and you're talking about competent fighters, and now you need a big fight. You need a statement."
