Eddie Hearn believes that Callum Smith should move up to light heavyweight.
Smith was beaten comfortably by Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez in December 2020 over 12 rounds in Texas as he lost out for the WBC and WBA super middleweight belts.
The defeat was the first of Smith’s career, and Matchroom promoter Hearn suggested he should consider moving up a division to help with his struggles to meet 168lbs.
Hearn believes that an extra seven pounds could help refocus his career.
Speaking to IFL TV, he said: “I just think he needs to move to 175lb and become a two-weight world champion.
“He’s had an amazing career, he’s had a great run, he’s made a lot of money.
“But he still has got challenges that he wants to overcome, and still has goals to achieve. I would love to see him move up to what’s an amazing 175 division."
At light heavyweight, Canadian Artur Beterbiev is both the WBC and IBF world champion. The WBA title is held by Dmitry Bivol, while the WBO belt will be contested by Joe Smith Jr. and Maxim Vlasov.
