Eumir Marcial's long-awaited Olympic debut got off to a dream start against Algeria's Younes Nemouchi.

The Philippines' Eumir Marcial made his long-awaited Olympic debut overnight, but it didn't last long as he stopped Algeria's Younes Nemouchi late in the first round at Tokyo 2020.

Marcial scored an early knockdown in the Round of 16 clash before the fight was stopped due to a cut above Nemouchi's right eye.

Labelled by some as 'the next Manny Pacquiao', including high praise from the legend's long-time trainer Freddie Roach, the middleweight is one of the favourites to be receiving a gold medal come the end of the Games.

Speaking after the fight, Marcial acknowledged the difficult test his opponent poised.

"It was a close fight," he said. "He just kept coming in. My right hook sent him down but he's a tough opponent."

The 25-year-old now advances to the quarter-finals where he will face Arman Darchinyan of Armenia this coming Sunday.

A win for Marcial would guarantee at least a bronze medal.
