When Conor McGregor was shockingly beaten by knockout for the first time at the hands of Dustin Poirier in the main event of UFC 257, the piling-on of anti-McGregor fans on social media was inevitable.
However, a former McGregor opponent and boxing legend also felt the urge to get involved.
Floyd Mayweather defeated the Irishman inside the boxing ring in a hugely lucrative crossover spectacle in August 2017. However ever since then he has taken every opportunity to add further trash talk, and talks of "The Notorious" returning to his sport to face Manny Pacquiao left "Money" particularly aggravated.
The 50-0 retired fighter responded to a post on social media with a long rant, claiming everybody loves McGregor but not him despite the MMA star copying his brash persona and characteristics.
He said: "The world knows Con Artist McLoser can steal everything from me and be loved but I’m hated. That just lets you all know that racism still exists.
"Just know, that bum will never be me or be on my level. I’m just built different, my mindset is on another planet, my skills are second to none, I’m a natural born winner and yes I talk a lot of trash, but every time I back it up! This is what they hate.
"It’s sad that you can be a poor black kid from the ghetto that has dealt with racism your whole life and work extremely hard to put yourself and your family in a better position, and most of the hate come from my own people.
"Conor can not even win in his own sport, but talking about coming back to boxing to fight Pacquiao. Nobody wants to see that, it's like my leftovers eating leftovers."
Defeat to Poirier no doubt dealt McGregor's chances of a second big-money boxing crossover a huge blow. That being said, considering the huge volumes of fight fans taking to social media to celebrate his humbling loss and post memes of the result, it's strange to think that Mayweather could actually believe McGregor is actually "loved."
