David Benavidez may have been unsuccessful in his pursuit of a fight against Canelo Alvarez, but he can still score a big win in 2025 if he faces David Morrell.
Benavidez is heavily speculated to be facing the Cuban in the early stages of 2025, and victory will put him in an excellent position to challenge for light-heavyweight honours.
When operating at 168lbs, Benavidez was a capable operator who enjoyed a world title reign whilst chasing the biggest fights available.
A recent move to 175lbs has Benavidez looking to become a two-weight world champion, and he can take a step closer to that dream by beating Morrell.
The talented star is also enjoying a recent run of excellent form and he’ll be confident he can cause a small shock against the Arizona man.
It’s a potential fight that has the boxing world excited, and Chris Algieri, a former world champion, is giving the edge to Benavidez.
“I think at 175, I would favor Benavidez. At 168, I may favor Morrell. He is fantastic,” said Algieri when speaking to Inside Boxing Live .
“Regardless, this fight, whatever weight class that it happens at, it’s a very tough fight. It’s a very close fight. I’m very happy it’s on the docket.
“I can’t wait until we get there because you never know in this sport. It’s an exciting time that we’ve got these young guys fighting each other.”
