Former world champion slaughters scoring of Canelo Alvarez vs. Gennadiy Golovkin 3Ed Mullholland/Matchroom

Canelo Alvarez appeared to get past Gennadiy Golovkin with relative ease when successfully defending his undisputed 168lbs world champion status against Gennadiy Golovkin.

For long periods of their trilogy meeting, Canelo was by far the better fighter, and when the final bell sounded, it was expected that the Mexican superstar would be confirmed a dominant winner.

Instead, Canelo faced an anxious wait to see if he had retained his titles as the scorecards told a completely different story.

One card of 116-112 seemed too close for comfort but two further scores of 115-113 in Canelo’s favour meant that Golovkin was just one round away from sneaking what would've been an unlikely draw.

Caleb Truax, the former IBF super-middleweight champion, a belt Canelo now holds, took to social media to express his disgust at the verdicts handed down by the ringside judges. “Those are three of the worst scorecards of all time,” wrote Truax on Twitter.

Despite the scores being close, the right man received the acclaim, and their third meeting was closed with a warm embrace before both men insisted they’d fight on.
