Canelo Alvarez has the backing of the vast portion of the boxing community as he heads into this month’s world title defence against Jermell Charlo.
The Mexican star begins the fight a significant favourite as his rival makes a two-weight division jump, but Freddie Roach is backing the smaller man to cause an upset.
Roach, one of boxing’s all-time great trainers, has been a long admirer of Canelo after watching him earn success in four different weight categories.
Despite being boxing’s most dominant performer over the last five years, Canelo has encountered some criticism for his recent form and Roach believes that Charlo can get the job done on September 30.
“I love the attitude that Charlo brings into the ring,” reported BoxingScene after Roach spoke to members of the media.
“He’s mean and defiant, and better yet, he backs that attitude up with his talent. He cannot be intimidated. He has a great chin and doesn’t get fazed by getting hit. Charlo is downright vicious inside the ring.
“I think Charlo will have too much firepower for Canelo to handle, especially at the higher weight. Canelo needs to stay away from Charlo’s left hook. The question is, can Canelo stay away from Charlo’s left hook? I don’t think he can, which is why I’m picking Charlo by stoppage.”
