'I loved it in Japan!' - Galal Yafai not ruling out return to country for Kenshiro Teraji battle

'I loved it in Japan!' - Galal Yafai not ruling out return to country for Kenshiro Teraji battleMark Robinson / Matchroom Boxing

Galal Yafai has admitted he would be happy to return to Japan for a world title fight against Kenshiro Teraji, but says he is yet to make a decision about his next move in the ring.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games champion took one step towards the WBC flyweight title by taking the interim title with a superb display against Sunny Edwards on Saturday.

Yafai, who previously lost to his rival and sparring partner as an amateur, dominated the contest to secure a sixth-round stoppage victory against the former IBF title holder.

That appears to set the stage for him to challenge full belt holder Teraji, one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, and Yafai admits he would go to Japan if needed.

"It'd be nice," he told a post-fight press conference. "I loved it in Japan. I was there for a while at the Olympics. I managed to have [success] fighting there, winning Olympic gold.

"If I have to go there, I go. But at the moment, I just want to chill and relax. I'll leave it up to Matchroom. I'll just do the training and the fighting, and let them design who I fight."

Teraji, a former unified light-flyweight champion, stepped up a division to defeat Cristofer Rosales in October for the vacant WBC flyweight title, extending his record to 24-1.

Though less than a year older than Yafai, the Japanese star is vastly more experienced at the professional level, with the Briton having fought only nine bouts since turning pro.

This did not prove to be an issue against the younger and more experienced Edwards however, who confirmed he would retire from the sport following his defeat in Birmingham.
