Errol Spence Jr. has backed Frank Martin to produce an upset on Saturday night.
Martin is fighting Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis live on Amazon PPV in the US and in the UK with Davis’ WBA lightweight title on the line.
The winner could then go on to attempt to unify the division, with the titles broken up after Devin Haney’s move up to 140lbs.
Martin had been linked with a fight against Shakur Stevenson, but has instead landed on his feet with a clash with ‘Tank’, one of the biggest names in the division.
Speaking to FightHype, Spence explained his decision.
“I’m very impressed. I think he’s ready. I think this is a moment he’s been waiting for a long time,” he said.
“A lot of people criticised him for not fighting Shakur Stevenson. A lot of people were like, ‘Ah, he gave us an opportunity,’ but a bigger opportunity came with Tank. I’m very excited about it. He can show people he is the top dog at 135 pounds.
“Frank listened to himself and decided it wasn’t the right fight to take.
”It’s good that Martin didn’t take the fight with Shakur because he might have lost that fight, and then his career would be in bad shape.”
