Chris Colbert is gearing up to defend his WBA interim junior lightweight title against Mongolian contender Tugstsogt Nyambayar at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, Calif. on Saturday night.
But after the final fight press conference Thursday, Colbert took some time out to discuss where he thinks Gervonta Davis will continue fighting, considering he's a world champion in three different weight class simultaneously right now, including 130 pounds alongside him, 135 pounds and 140 pounds, where 'Tank' recently claimed the WBA (Regular) junior welterweight champion after defeating Mario Barrios by 11th-round TKO.
As he thought about it, Colbert believes Davis could do more damage at 140 pounds at the expense of undisputed junior welterweight king Josh Taylor.
"I think 140, (Davis) definitely could unify if they could make that fight with Josh Taylor because I don't think Taylor could beat him. I think he'd knock Taylor out," Colbert told the media, as reported by FightHype.com. "That guy is explosive and I don't think Taylor have the defense for it. Taylor don't have the defense for it. He don't have the speed and discipline to stick to doing what he needs to do to beat him. You have to be disciplined to beat Gervonta Davis."
A lack of discipline is what Colbert believes hurt Barrios as well. Despite the fact that Colbert could face Davis someday at 130 pounds if 'Tank' sticks around the division, Colbert was more than willing to salute Davis for what he called a "tremendous" performance against Barrios.
"He looked tremendous this weekend," Colbert said about Davis. "I'm no hater, I never hate, no hate in my blood. He showed the world that he got more than what they think he just got, which is power. He got defense, he got speed, he got it all."
