GGG on Canelo: ‘Where has he been all these years?’

GGG on Canelo: ‘Where has he been all these years?’DAZN
Gennadiy Golovkin has a question for Canelo Alvarez.
Gennadiy Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez produced two "Fight of the Year" candidates in 2017 and 2018.

They battled to a split draw in the first fight, in which the consensus was that "GGG" should have gotten the decision. Golovkin and Alvarez ran it back one year later, with Canelo winning a majority decision. Many called for an immediate trilogy, but it hasn't occurred.

Golovkin returns to the ring on April 9 to face Ryoto Murata in a middleweight title unification bout, which you can see on DAZN (check your country for availability). One month later, Alvarez returns to the ring as he moves back up to light heavyweight to challenge WBA champion Dmitry Bivol on DAZN PPV (check your country for availability). The prevailing thought is if Golovkin and Canelo each win their respective fights, the score will be settled. For Golovkin, he's trying to figure out why boxing's top fighter decided that now could possibly be the time to make a third bout.

“I’ll be honest with you. If he believes it was something I said and that it was personal, where has he been all these years? Three or four years already?" Golovkin said on The Ariel Helwani Show

Before discussions can start on a trilogy, Golovkin has to get by Murata and Alvarez has to take care of Bivol. That is something Golovkin (41-1-1, 36 KOs) wants people to remember so they don't jump ahead of themselves.

“It’s premature to discuss it," Golovkin said. "Let’s wait until the end of May to have a better picture, and then we’ll have this as a topic for discussion,” said Golovkin when asked if he definitely will be fighting Canelo on September 17.

“I don’t want to jump the gun and pass the things still in front of me. Let’s step by step."
