Could a future date with Oleksandr Usyk be in the cards for the winner of Saturday's Gilberto "Zurdo" Ramirez vs. Chris Billam-Smith fight?
Zurdo and Billam-Smith will face off in Riyadh, live on DAZN, each carrying a cruiserweight world title to the ring. The WBA belt currently belongs to Zurdo, who won the strap from Arsen Goulamirian earlier this year.
Meanwhile, Billam-Smith has held the WBO title since defeating former champion Lawrence Okolie in May 2023.
Saturday's fight will likely unify the two titles, and the winner of the bout may go on to face the last man who held both belts simultaneously, according to Golden Boy Promotions boss Oscar De La Hoya.
"I heard through the grapevine that a special world champion in the heavyweight division is considering moving down to cruiserweight and fighting the winner of Saturday's fight," De La Hoya said on Thursday at the press conference for Zurdo vs. Billam-Smith.
"Oleksandr Usyk is considering coming down to cruiserweight and fighting the winner of Saturday night. That's how special this fight is."
Usyk is the current unified world heavyweight champion after becoming undisputed earlier this year by defeating former WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury. The Ukrainian, who will take on Fury in a rematch next month, is one of two fighters who have held the undisputed title at both cruiserweight and heavyweight (along with Evander Holyfield).
