Hannah Rankin admitted she was "devastated" that her fight for the vacant WBO middleweight world championship against Savannah Marshall was canceled, but it looks set to happen before 2020 is over.
London 2012 Olympian Marshall's trainer, Peter Fury, tested positive for COVID-19 during fight week and as a result, the entire team was forced to enter self-isolation and the chief support to Lewis Ritson's main event against Miguel Vazquez will not be taking place on Saturday.
With the Scottish 30-year-old stuck inside the Peterborough 'bubble' without a fight, she joined press conference hosts Chris Lloyd and Darren Barker to discuss the postponement and discuss what's next.
"I’m devastated," she explained. "I was bang on the weight I wanted to be and was excited to put on a show.
"I really hope Peter makes a quick recovery and I can’t wait to get it on."
It appears that Eddie Hearn will waste no time in getting the fight back on at a future show, once the Marshall team has the all-clear."It’s definitely going to be rescheduled for this year," Rankin continued. "I’m not sure about next month because they have to self-isolate for 14 days.
"But I’m going to relax for a bit, have a day off and then get back into the gym."
Matchroom have a number of cards set for November, with Katie Taylor headlining on Nov. 14, Dillian Whyte vs. Alexander Povetkin II taking place on Nov. 21 and talk of a card main evented by Billy Joe Saunders potentially happening on Nov. 28, though the exact date and details have yet to be confirmed.
If, as Rankin noted, it turns out to be too soon, there is also an expected show on Dec. 12 with Anthony Joshua defending his WBA, WBO and IBF heavyweight titles against Bulgaria's Kubrat Pulev that could potentially feature Marshall vs. Rankin on the undercard.
Whenever it does happen, Rankin is adamant it will be a treat for viewers.
"The fans haven’t really seen the women fight for a world title at this weight," she said. "Both of us can bang, and both of us are coming in to make a statement.
"We’ve seen the lightweights tough it out, but it’s our turn now."
Ritson vs. Vazquez airs live on Saturday, Oct. 17 on Sky Sports in the U.K. and DAZN in the U.S.
