Eddie Hearn has refused to rule out a 2021 clash with his fighter Dillian Whyte and controversial former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder.
Wilder has spent much of the last month aiming accusations at Tyson Fury, claiming he had loaded his gloves with weights to increase the damage his punches would do. Fury stopped Wilder in February 2020 in their second fight, when the British fighter won the WBC belt.
The Bronze Bomber, who also claimed that his drink had been spiked with a muscle relaxant, has suggested that he could face Whyte in a future fight.
However the American is currently in mediation with Fury over a dispute centering on a third match. Fury believes the contract obliging him to a rematch has expired, while Wilder and his team are attempting to enforce it.
Whyte was set to face Fury as the WBC’s mandatory challenger, but a surprise defeat to Alexander Povetkin during the summer meant he lost the designation, and Whyte will have to wait for a rematch after the Russian was hospitalised with coronavirus. A date of January has been tentatively put forward but has not yet been finalised.
Speaking to talkSPORT, Hearn questioned Wilder’s mental state after his string of outbursts.
“Deontay Wilder has lost his marbles,” Hearn said.
“I mean, he has accused Tyson Fury of all sorts; people spiking his water, his ring walk outfit was too heavy. I mean, I don’t know what’s going on there.”
Hearn then explained that while the two stars of the division, Fury and Joshua, are occupied for the foreseeable future, Whyte could be an option.
“But everybody is kind of mapped out; AJ has got Pulev, beat him, fight Tyson Fury. Dillian Whyte is going to rematch Alexander Povetkin so Wilder is a little bit frozen out right now,” Hearn stated.
“But listen, he’s a good fighter and he is exciting so once he gets his mind straight, I’m sure he will return in 2021. A fight between Deontay Wilder and Dillian Whyte is a big draw. But for Dillian, he must beat Povetkin at the start of 2021.”
