Is changing trainers the right decision for Ryan Garcia?

Is changing trainers the right decision for Ryan Garcia?DAZN
Chris Mannix and Sergio Mora debated Ryan Garcia's trainer switch on JABS.

While he may not have fought for over a year, Ryan Garcia has got boxing fans talking after announcing a change in trainer.

Last week saw the lightweight star reveal he has swapped Eddy Reynoso swap for Joe Goosen, a decision which in the eyes of Sergio Mora is the wrong one.

"No, I don’t Mannix, I don’t like it," Mora responded when asked by Chris Mannix on JABS about the change.

"You’re 5-0 with Eddy Reynoso, he’s the trainer of the year in 2021.

"You’re training alongside the pound-for-pound number one boxer on the planet in Canelo Alvarez, everything’s going right for you and you now want to throw a wrench in the mix and mix it up.

"Joe Goosen is an excellent trainer, he’s been in there with some great names, he knows how to train lanky punchers.

"But everything’s going good for Ryan Garcia, why change it now!?

"No, I’m not onboard with this trainer change."

Mannix echoed a similar feeling and expressed his desire to know why Garcia has made the change.

"I think I need to know more about the ‘why’ with Ryan Garcia," Mannix said.

"If it was because he wasn’t getting enough attention from Eddy Reynoso, look, we’ve seen that happen in the past.

"We just saw Vergil Ortiz leave Robert Garcia for that. We saw Jose Ramirez leave Freddie Roach for Robert Garcia, that kind of thing happens in boxing.

"But if he left Eddy Reynoso because he felt like he was being criticised too much or the work was a little bit too hard or too intense, then that’s a problem.

"We all know about Canelo Alvarez’s criticisms of Ryan Garcia, he was very public with them late last year.

"Eddy Reynoso does have some very talented fighters in his camp and he does demand that you bring that same level of intensity every single time that you show up."

While some fans may not be excited by Garcia's link-up with Goosen, Mannix was quick to point out Goosen is a trainer who is operating at a championship level.

"Ryan Garcia isn’t going home to train with his father, Joe Goosen is a legitimate championship level trainer," Mannix explained.

"He is probably best known over the last 20 some odd years for working with Diego Corrales who he turned into one of the better fighters of his generation.

"He’s had some other good fighters along the way, Chris Arreola is among the others.

"He’s going to go into that camp with Joe Goosen working with a professional trainer, a trainer by the way who told me years ago that he really wished he had the opportunity to work with Ryan Garcia."
