Jarrell Miller’s trainer has told the heavyweight fighter what he needs to do to become a ‘monster’ in the ring.
Miller was in typically abrasive form in the build-up to the Day of Reckoning, goading Anthony Joshua, the fighter he failed to challenge because of a failed drugs test, and attempting to wind up his opponent that weekend, Daniel Dubois.
The American made a decent attempt of walking down the British fighter in the opening rounds of the fight, but the younger man eventually stopped him in the closing moments as his second wind carried him over the line.
Dubois was almost a full 100lbs lighter than Miller, who tipped the scales at 333lbs at the pre-fight weigh-in.
He has often struggled with his weight during his career and there was perhaps an inevitability that his attempt to outlast his opponent ended in him beaten by fatigue as much as by his determined opponent.
Aureliano Sosa, his trainer, thinks that the lack of fitness was what cost his fighter, and wants him to lose at least 33lbs, and potentially more.
“I don’t think he was hurt. He was just exhausted,” Sosa told BoxingScene.com.
“The weight definitely played a big role. It was a little bit of Dubois. He was moving a little more than we thought he would be but the weight was an issue and for some reason, the conditioning dropped after the third or fourth round.
“At 285-300, he would be a monster.”
